I'm thinking about having a custom break cue made and am curious what my options are for a ferrule. Are some better than others for withstanding the break and transferring energy? Also what is the best tip for break cue?
Thanks.

Either a phenolic tip/ferrule one piece, or just an ivorene or mylar ferrule with a phenolic tip would be best.

use aegis or fiber. aegis is the hardest,,,,fiber ferrule is the most resilient(used on house cues). forget the phenolic tip stuff. get a smartly constructed bc with a massive metal joint.

The best currently made material for break cue ferrules is Ivorine 4. Very much bulletproof.;) The old house cue fiber material worked wonderful as well and was very durable. Its no longer made or sold and is getting hard to find...no big deal though because it would get dirty very easily, absorb water/moisture very, very easily and swell larger than the shaft.

Melamine

My last Invorine 3 ferrule cracked two weeks old. I suggest 14mm Melamine.

I would suggest a phenolic ferrule, if you can get it in stalled in the following manner. The shaft should be drilled 5/16 for 1 1/4 inches. The hole should be tapped at 3/8-10. The Phenolic rod should be cut at 2 1/4 inches with 1 1/4 being turned down and treaded for 3/8. The ferrule is then screwed down into the shaft and epoxied.

This will eliminated the ping / tink sound from the Phenolic tip / ferrules that are installed over a wooden tenon. It will also make the feel as solid as it gets, and enhance your ability to control the cue ball after breaks. This technique will also increase your ability to break and to jump by transmitting more force than normal method's or any other tip.

Hope this helps

I had Bob Dzuricky make a break shaft with a cueball ferulle and a white diamond tip. It works real good.

I try break cue with phenolic ferrule/tip one piece or use Ageis as the ferrules and WB break tip combination.

I still have about 1200 1" fibre ferrules if you need some....

G-10

I am a fan of the G-10 tip/ferrule combo. I am by no means a cue maker, just a hack player. This combo beats all I have ever tried.

What is the difference between Ivorine III and 4?

I3 was wound around a mandrel and I4 is made in sheets. The linen is more coarse in I4 and it is considerably harder. The resin is also different making I4 more dense and less likey to discolor from chalk.
