What would be the better purchase predator vs schon?

Hey I was looking at this cue for sale, it's a Schon CX 85 and really love the way it looks.

I've never hit with a schon before old or new. Would this be a better purchase or would a predator cue with a revo shaft be better in terms of playability? I really want a cue that is going to last me a really long time and play awesome. Looks of the cue is far in the background. So my question is what's the best route to go? a schon or a predator with a revo shaft?

-Thanks

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention is that I shoot with a high end mcdermott but don't really like the hit of it, too soft for my liking. Will any of these cues mentioned above hit much stiffer then a mcdermott?

Stiffer hit would IMO go to revo by a good margin.

Deflection is lower, again.... by a mile.

Other than DEFLECTION PROPERTIES........ its ALL nothing more than personal preference!!!!!!!!!!! Eventhough, deflection is a preference too. It's just that deflection is lower or higher by FACTS, not just because I say it's my opinion.

Also..... McDermott IMO is not even in the running when compared to the two you mentioned.

Again, after you decide on super low deflection or not...... it's really useless for anyone to say "I like this or that"....... that's THEIR preference, not yours and will help you absolutely none at all unless they are gonna be playing for you.

These are 2 pretty different products. The better purchase is going to be the one you
like better. I think the Schon will probably age a little better and retain its value, but
the Revo is all the rage. The Revo hasn’t really been out long enough to know how
well it will hold its value. It may only last as long as until the next flavor of the month
is introduced. I own both (a much older Schon though). I prefer the hit of a maple shaft,
many people would tell you they like the Revo more. I think you will find the Revo much
stiffer, far less deflection, it will take some getting used to and the transition may not be
smooth, the Schon is a maple cue with a a traditional maple shaft, like the one you’ve
played with before. It will have to be a personal choice. Try a Revo, if you like it then
go with it.

I'd go with the predator if it was up to me. I've never been a fan of schon. Don't like ss joints and never liked the hit all that much. Tried a few schons before as a friend had a few. Many people have shot and loved schons for many years. I own lots of big money customs and I own a few Revo's. As of now I only take the Revo's out with me whenever I go shoot. Don't see myself going back to wood anytime soon. Do see myself trying more CF shafts as they come out.

Same here.

I've owned what most consider very high end wooden shafts / cues that cannot even come close to the CF cues out now....... revo, becue, cuetec.....etc...etc....

When speaking about FACT based things such as deflection, energy transfer, stiff hits..... , the CF cues are head and shoulders above any wooden shaft.

Of course, there are lots and lots of people that have invested money into cues that may or may not hold their value with the upcoming generation. They just don't care who made the cue... none in the least.

I shoot with a schon butt and a revo shaft. My set up is amazing. But. If I were you I'd get the predator if you gonna compete a lot. Easier to deal with stuff like an extension.

If you just want a good cue get a schon. It'll still be a schon ten years from now. Your preditor will be worthless. I think the revos will sell for a 100 bucks 3 years from now once mezz and everyone else comes out with carbon fiber and preditor will comeout with something new to keep the sales coming.

Do this. Start with the shaft first. That's most important. Then pick a butt to match it. Not other way around. Ideally you don't want to change the insert.

I would never own or support Schon cues. They are complete and utter assholes and have terrible customer service. A lot of people on here like predator, but unfortunately for me, I have owned 2 predator shafts and both warped on me so im not a fan. But regardless I would choose predator over Schon. You might consider trying out a Jacoby cue before making a decision though. They are a high quality cue and make a great shaft as well called the edge hybrid. Most of the good players in my area are using them now a days or else using standard shafts. Predator kind of fizzed out around here about 5-10 years ago. I can't think if anyone around my area that even uses one anymore.

change the tip to a triangle on your mc dermott before you waste big money
you might really like what you have

I agree with this. Try a Triangle...you might like it.

As for your question.. I have a Predator and Schon. The REVO is used on both and they're great players. You'll like either one.

The Predators can be customized by the owner... Weight change, screw on butt extension, etc,

I agree with Dean. Try changing your setup in this order..

Change the tip. Try a few.
Change the shaft. Again try different shaft/tip combos.
Change the cue.

The benefit of doing it this way is that you get to learn how to disect the hit of the cue based on individual variables. It may be a long ride, but it will be fun (and hopefully informative).

While in my experience this is certainly true now, it wasn't always always true. They used
to be most helpful, but now the prices have gone up, customer service and quality are at
an all time low. It's too bad really, my Schon is from the early 90's and it's an excellent
cue. If I were to guess I'd say some big things there changed when Evan Clark left the
Schon group. As thing s stand now I wouldn't purchase a Schon manufactured after,
what was it?, about 2010? or has it been longer? There are still a couple of Schons
from before the turn of the century that I would like to have, but absolutely nothing from
the last several years.
Those are my personal feelings, I'd never tell anyone to not buy a Schon. Your cue is a
very personal item, you should pick the one that suits you best, it may be a new Schon

Huge difference between a Schon hard maple shaft and a Revo low deflection shaft. Best playing for someone who has played with low deflection shafts for 20+ years would hands down for me be the Predator / Revo, but I don't know what cue/shaft you've played with previously.

Ive only really played with mcdermott cues and I own a joss break cue. Ive never shot with any other cue then these 2. I pulled the trigger and bought the predator ikon 3-5. Will I be able to tell the difference in the hit and feel from a mcdermott or does predator and mcdermott have fairly the same hit? I have a higher end mcdermott with a g core shaft.

Oh come on now, I would gladly pay almost $1200 for a cue with a pearl plastic points.

I was playing with my Schon CX-48 with a mid-cue extension and a Revo shaft.

Then I tried the Prime M shaft, liked that even more. Then I realized that I get more control without the extension, so now I'm using the Prime M on a Lucasi with Uni-Loc joint. I'm playing the best with this setup right now.

Which mm size Revo did you order with the Icon? Good luck with it.
