This situation came up for me in an early-round match at the ACS Indiana State tournament. I ran out most of my balls and played safe, he tried to get out and scratched, but I was left with this layout. I'm stripes.

The 9 has no straight-in pocket, and all of the one-rail banks are blocked. BIH with no shot and a layout that makes playing safes difficult. I ask, what would your shot be here? I'll throw down what I did after the first few posts.

CueTable Help

I would bank the 9 towards the pocket where the 4 is at, hopefully hitting the short rail before the 4 ball to use it as a carom shot. If it goes in you have a straight shot at the 8 in the side.

i would bank the 9 towrds the three ball. and try to get the cue ball frozen or close to the 7 ball. try to get the 9 in the way of the 3 ball. any little mistake game is over.cue ball against the seven ball is the best choice. i think

What to do?

I would carom the 9 off the 6 ball and slide it down past the 7 into the corner.

Phew! Glad I'm not the only one willing to take this shot!

That's what I did during the teams tournament, put the cue ball on the rail, jacked up a touch, and drilled the 9 into the side of the 6, caromed into the corner pocket. CB followed up a few feet and shot the 8 in the near side pocket for the caaaiiiishhhhh out.

I would do the same on a bar table. Not a hard shot if you have played on that table for a few games. Johnnyt
