What Would you Do Here?

I mean, if you're going to play show-off pool, why not go all out?

I did say I preferred your safety.

Sorry all, but SJM has the one and only correct answer to this layout.

Roll up on the 7 and let your opponent screw up and give you a shot.

Anyone who thinks that they can 2 rail and bank it in with inside is HIGH!!

The bank is ridiculous. First, it's REALLY tough to make. Second, even if you do make it, the cueball is going to race around the table and probably settle about 9 feet away from the 9-ball. Seriously, if you ever wonder why you lose tough games - look no further than this decision.

Not nearly as ridiculous as that shot in your avatar. I mean, what the hell are you kicking at -- the chalk?? :D

Bank

The bank isn't as hard as it would seem, depends how the shot lays. There is a chance that the shot plays long and would leave a hard shot on the seven.Jude is right though why risk the shot.Roll up safe is a good chioce:D .From there you can see what develops from there.

Wouldn't try the shot in a match, but I'll take a shot at the 1 rail all day for some cash.NO I don't smoke or drink.:D

Just one last thing. Congratulations, GG11, on your first "how would you play this?" thread. As you've seen, these threads are quite popular when an interesting position is offered, and yours was interesting. Keep those great posts coming.

I'd like to take a shot at this but...

I think I would hit the 7-ball thin on the left side...running english on the cue ball to make it rest at the middle diamond on the bottom rail...and leave the 7-ball less than a diamond away from the middle of the top rail...give my opponent that shot...it's not easy...I don't want to duck here but I'll give my opponent the opportunity for the circus shot or get into a safety battle...and expect to win the game...on a subsequent shot...

Mike

I agree with mike, that was my first thought. There are some good options but I would normally go with my gut instint on this type of shot.
Anyway have fun this weekend GG.

So what are some other options here?
I shot your shot about 50 times on my table. Interestingly, the placement of the balls is extremely critical given their close proximity. I set this up with the 7 ball about 1/8" from the rail and the cue ball about 1/2" from the 7. The center of the balls lines up to be about at the top point of the corner pocket by the 9. But I note that moving the cue ball just 1/2" in any direction can significantly alter the shot.

Based on my setup, I like Actionhound's reply best (shown below). You give yourself a chance to win - even if it's only 10% - while still playing a mediocre safe if you don't execute properly. I was able to play dead safe 2 out of 10 (i.e., hidden behind the 9); a decent safe 1 time (couldn't see the whole 7), and I left a two rail safety reply (similar to the shot below) the rest of the time. I didn't leave a reasonable cross bank in 10 tries. The best part is that it's fairly easy to execute -> you just need a wee-bit of inside.

CueTable Help

I'm not a fan of Jude's safe, as there is 100% chance that your opponent can do something in return. Below is the most likely response - which leaves you in a pickle. I attempted this safe about 10 times, and only froze to the rail once. But I was able to play the 2 rail return safe all 10 times - with varying degrees of success.

CueTable Help

I shot the shot below a few times, just to see if I could pocket the 9. These results were most often bad - clearly leaving a reply safe - and never making the 9.

CueTable Help

The simplest option was bunting the 7 and keeping them both together. But, this is betting that your opponent will botch it. Unless the 7 freezes, you'll be looking at the same shot since the natural reply will be another bunt. Might work out in your favor. But might not.

I also tried a half dozen whack attacks and multi-rail shots. All of these were sell outs of varying degrees. Doh!

Lastly, the cross bank is makable, and you don't have to hit it that hard, which allows you to keep the cue ball at the bottom of the table. If you have pocket speed on the 7 and miss, you're either leaving it at the top of the side pocket (i.e., good safe) or at the bottom of the side pocket (i.e., complete sell out). If you have bad speed and don't make the ball, it's almost always a sell out ;) I only made it once...

Well, the problem with ANY safety here is that unless you get something magical to happen (which can happen), you're going to be faced with some sort of a return safety.

Your two-railer safe behind the 9-ball is something that might become available if you just tap the 7. There's nothing GREAT here and you're going to return to the table in yet another tough safety situation however, you can still prolong things by keeping the 9-ball stationary, no matter which route you take.

GG11 layout:

CueTable Help

Banking the seven into the side would require a thin cut and a very hard hit on the cue ball. Odds are, the cue ball is going at least three rails, and will need to go at least five to get a good leave on the nine. But.................

Layout in TD873 Post

CueTable Help

Suddenly, the bank into the side got a whole lot easier. the distance between the cue and seven has probably doubled and the angle has been reduced quite a bit.

Two different positions. To accurately reproduce the position in another post, the wei code from that post must be copied in.

I see 4 shots on the 7 all of which leave varying degrees of
success on the nine.

hardest: come off top rail stun the seven to the bottom
corner pocket leave the nine to the corner pocket ( bottom right of diagram)

not quite as hard: bank off bottom rail once take 7 in top
corner leave 9 in opposite corner.(bottom right of the diagram)

better yet: hit 7 firm with top right drop it in opposite
corner( bottom left in the diagram) bring the cueball 2 rails leave the 9 in the corner. ( top right of the diagram)

Best: take 7 one rail to the side softly with bottom right
leave the 9 in the corner. (bottom right of the diagram)

just my $.02

I Guess I better figure out how to use that cue table thing LOL

For the $5,000 I'm freezing the 7-ball to the rail. I have a nifty way of doing it which is perfectly legal and will freeze the 7 probably 8 out of 10 times if not more and leave the cue right on it.

I like to bank, but I see no reason for banking my cash away. The two-rail kick was a bad idea and I'll let anyone who plans on being in the South Florida area kick at it for whatever price they want. I don't really like leaving the distance against better players (or even same caliber players) because I'm giving them a great chance at playing a good return that will be really tough for me to get out of... Although I must say that aside from the tapping onto the 7 ball that was the best answer.

Of course if the situation was slightly different then how I see it on the layout (sometimes the cue-table layouts and seeing it in real life are completely different) then everything might change.

JEEZ! you guys are probably missing the easiest safety in the world! take your cue, hold it toward the tip near the ferrule (the tip is facing you) with your fingers of both hands (let the butt rest on the table) and stand on the side of the 7 ball. with the slightest of finger motion, PULL the tip into the CB and gently nudge the CB against the 7 ball.

as long as you have one hand on your cue, it is not a foul.

this is a trick that a pro once taught me.

and the chances that the OB will freeze is that much greater than if you tried to do a normal finesse shot to freeze the OB and at the very lease, you leave your opponent in a shape much worse than you. if he somehow makes the shot, you're just going to have to let it go. you did the best you could. all the other shots shown require a certain level of skill to pull off the safety or make the shot and has a decent chance of you selling out.

Thanks!!

I liked Actionhound and Jude's shot options. My only concern would be the banking options left and the safety play back. It's amazing how if you don't walk around the table on these shots, you don't even see all the options. This shot never even occurred to me:eek: Bad exercising on my part!! Thanks for the input!!

The Bank-Kicking it in options just scare me! Though I really just enjoyed the creative thinking so thanks SuperGreenMan & Uwate! However, just for clarity, the CB and 7 were extremely close together. The double hit is very very possible. It's hard to show that on Cuetable. Probably should have written that in.

The first player to separate the cue and the seven ball here is the underdog to win the rack.
I agree. I attempted to do this and sold out the shot!! I made a poor decision and then on top of that poorly executed the shot, and deservingly so, racked the balls for my opponent! BAD GG, BAD!!

Against a strong player, I'm tapping the seven to the rail and awaiting further developments. Even if I don't freeze it, my opponent may opt to play the safety, which would please me. If not, one of us will eventually freeze the seven and the other will be forced to play that safe. If my opponent is able to freeze the seven, I'll play the safety in a way that tries to leave my opponent bridging over the nine on their next shot, and if I can execute that, I've eliminated my opponent's edge in the safety battle.
Patience is the winning formula here, in my opinion.
Patience is what I didn't have and it cost me. I actually thought to tap it and hope to freeze it, and just went, "ah, whatever!"

Oh, patience, why do you abandon me so often??

It's hard to say but it looks like you can hit the 7 thin on the right side and use left english and draw on the cue ball to billiard the nine in. The combination of draw and reverse side spin gets angles that look impossible to beginners. The shot should be safe if you miss.
Extremely creative! Again, the double hit would be a factor hear as well. The CB & 7 were very very close. But if you hit it right, I could see how this would be an option. But I agree with Jude, the sellout here could be dangerously looming, especially at my low-handicapped capabilities. But thank you Bob for yet another option I never even considered!

TD873, WOW! I'm so impressed that you actually went and shot the shot for a bit! Kudos to you for being so proactive!! I'd have quoted your whole post, but my post looks pretty long already!! But I like the word "Doh!" so I had to include it! Your testing seem to concur with SJM right? Thanks for the insight! I went and tried it on a table myself and I did like the tapping of the 7 best as well!!

Again, thanks again guys for all you help!! I really enjoyed reading everyone's ideas!!
