What Would You Do in This Situation?

Lets say you are playing in a big regional tournament, a couple pros and a bunch of shortstops are present. You are pretty far in the tournament, and lets say its single elimination. You and your opponent have been playing real good pool. It goes hill-hill, and the winner of this match advances to the quarter-finals.

Your opponent has a routine, fairly easy shot on the 9ball. He or she gets down on the shot, takes a few practice strokes and then is about to hit the cueball, when suddenly a drunken customer trips over some obstruction nearby and bumps into your opponents cue. That causes him to miss the 9ball badly. Your opponent had no way of knowing someone was walking by, and the bump obviously caused him to mess up the shot.

Lets say the tournament director is a moron and doesn't know what to do. Would you:

The drunk is not your fault (unless you hired him), but in all fairness, I probably would call for playing the game over with the original breaker breaking.

Well its gonna be very difficult to please both players here, but I think the fairest way to settle it would be to play the entire game over. I dont think either player would want to end such a tight match on a fluke note like someone stumbling into them. JMO.

I'd have to go for playing it over again. I'd probably end up feeling a little sick afterward but I believe in fairness.

When it comes to interference, you're supposed to reset the shot as closely as possible and make him shoot it, no foul. If it was a hanger, I would give him the game. It's unfair to take the win or even replay the game when there is outside interference.

This is the perfect answer. You are there to play a match and have control solely of yourself and your own actions. You are not responsible for others in the room and your opponant should understand that.

If it is NOT stated in the rules that such a situation should call for a re-rack, I'd take ball in hand, feel really badly about it, and win.

But I also agree with Tate in saynig that if it was truly a hanger and my opponent proved to be a competent player, I'd just give it to him.

Well in that case you just lost....He never said anything about the opponent fouling...He only said he missed the 9-ball badly...

By you Grabbing the CB you just gave up BIH to your opponent...

BTW...I agree fully with TATE...If someone (physically caused a miss) I would reset the shot and allow him to shoot the shot over...(not the whole rack)

If it happened to be a drunk staggering by the other end of the table and was only falling all over himself in the guys line of sight (but had no effect physically on the shot), I would not re-set the shot...The other player in that case should have stopped an re-set.

The only fair thing to do would be to reset the shot.

I've had similar experiences in less important circumstances and that is what we did.

Oh, in that case walk up to the table with a shite eating grin and say to your opponent "hey can you watch my back, I don't want some drunk asshole stumbling into me" THEN fire in the 9 and do your elaborate victory dance while singing Drop It Like It's Hot
