I had this come up the other night in a weekly tourny. Of course we were hill hill. Sadly to admit if in case your shot is based upon skill level this guy was weak. APA 3-4. Only rating system I am real familar with.
Offense or defense, what would you do?
In a little while I'll post what I did, which wasn't succesful. I want to learn something here.

Not a shot one would like every game, eh?

You could go for it:
START(
%BN5\4%CJ9_1%EN5]7%FL9\8%H[3J3%Ik7K7%JL9^1%KK4]8%ML7^9%OL1^2
%Pr6H4%UM3C8%V[5I4%WX2S6%XC3G3%]D0[2%^Z6J6
)END

If the CB is off the rail, I might shoot this:
START(
%BN5\4%CJ9_1%EN5]7%FL9\8%H[3J3%Ik7K7%JL9^1%KK4]8%ML7^9%OL1^2
%Pr6H4%QV7S0%UD3C9%VZ7I5%W\4K1%Xq8H6%YW3T9%ZV5[3%]W3Z4%^[6K1
%eB0b1
)END

or you could duck:
START(
%BN5\4%CJ9_1%EN5]7%FL9\8%H[3J3%Ik7K7%JL9^1%KK4]8%ML7^9%OL1^2
%Pr6H4%UW2D4%VZ7I5%W\4K1%Xq8H6%]D0X5%^[6K1
)END

Mae the 8 in the corner with high inside english and go around three rails for shape.

START(
%H\6J8%Il5L0%Pr8H6%W]4J9%Xr4H6%YC4C6%Z\5J9%eC2`6%_C4V8%`I9[2
%a\5J8%b_5S9%cP2C4%dC1U9
)END

Sorry, that is a bad spot. Hope the other guy left you there. :-)

It seems to me that there is really nothing strong to do either offensively or defensively with the cue ball on the rail. I would attempt what the announcers usually call a "containing" safety like:

START(
%BN5\4%CJ9_1%EN5]7%FL9\8%H[3J3%Ik7K7%JL9^1%KK4]8%ML7^9%OL1^2
%Pr6H4%QK9J2%UC8L1%VZ1J2%W\4J3%Xq8H6%]r3O2%^C6L2
)END

with the cue ball ending up at A. If it works and I was my opponent, I would then try to hook me behind the nine, but the hook on such finese shots is easy to miss and the eight might end up by the lower corner pocket. At worst I pull out the jump cue.

Sorry it's 9 ball.
Its kind of funny. I looked a the table for a long time and was drawing a blank. I swear I thought if I shot it in the bottom left it would scratch in the side. But I know where the balls are are right, so it was just me, maybe afraid I would hit it that hard and it would slide over maybe.
Didn't see that first safty black balled said. Another shot for the memory bank.

After my match I asked a buddy of mine what to do and he said pretty much eales safty. A little diffrent though, he banked it to the other side of the nine, left the cue ball by the lower left pocket, and acually got lucky enough to have the 8 behind the nine. I would never be so lucky...lol :)

You gotta remember to Keep It Simple, Stupid (not to insult anyone directly.

Bankig the 8 1.5 table lengths and stopping it w/ in 3" or the rail will not have as high a% of success as the safe I illustrated.

That said, the best defensive shot is to make the 8, then the 9.

If I’m playing safe then I’d shoot this.

START( %BN5\4%CJ9_1%EN5]7%FL9\8%H[2J5%Ik7K7%JL9^1%KK4]8%ML7^9%OL1^2 %Pr6H4%QK9J2%UD5T4%VZ2J7%W\9J1%Xq8H6%YV5D3%ZZ9I6%[R0[0%\C2T9 %]r3Q0%^S4[2%eB4a8%bD3O0%cM0H6%dU0C5 )END

If I was going for the make I’d play it like Black-balled’s first shot.

I like Eales simple safety. Leaves a hard bank or possible cut depending on exactly where the balls end up. Easy to shoot without worrying about possible scratches, etc.

If you're going to shoot it, this is the right shot. All you have to do is pocket the ball...position is natural. I would definitely shoot it.

UMMM! Nice one- don't know if I woulda seen it, had I come to it in a match, but it is an excellent option. The CB is approaching the finishing rail at a more parallell than perpendicular angle; the OB goes toward the centre of the rail far ,far away. Nice one. Thanks for the lesson!

This is what I acually tried to shoot. Not to simple. I find it weird that it was really the only shot that I saw. However I ended up scratching in the side. Hit a couple times afterwards when it didn't matter.
Thank you everyone for their thoughts.

Neat choice of shot CantEverWin...

But, from the layout you initally showed, you had all four corner pockets available to you, 2 cuts, and 2 banks, and still get back to the 9 for the win.

lol well call me simple but i think id just try to put the 8 in the top corner and leave myself a cut shot on the 9. Id prob aim to hit the 8 a little fuller so if i missed it would come back up table and stop around the 2nd diamond, the cueball would end up near the opposte 2nd diamond, so its a decent safe if you miss.

Against a player as weak as this, I believe the safety recommended by Eales is the best choice.
