some background on the cue: i recently picked up a Huebler which was either made with an smaller tip (11 mm), or has been turned down somewhere along the line. it has the original (very subtle) rings and the nylon insert.

i am a relative novice cuemaker, have a hightower lathe, have replaced quiet a few tips and ferules and made a couple of shafts.

i have read on how to make a stub out of the original shaft and join it to a new shaft retaining the insert and the rings, and i am confident that i could do that.

i also thought about just setting aside the original shaft and making a whole new shaft with a plain black collar (like i said the brown on the collar is very subtle, you cant really see it without looking closely) and a different insert (probably not nylon, probably phenolic) and trying to replicate the taper from one of my other Hueblers.

if you had this cue under these conditions, what would you do?

your time and knowledge is appreciated,
seth

In your situation, I would make a new shaft. I have done quite a few new shafts using the original joint as you described.

Practice a few before you put the original shaft in the band saw.

What do the rings look like.... can you copy them?
