What Wrong With The Game We Love?

Pocket billiards, is just to tough to sell to the sporting public. Always has been and always will be. Nothing has changed in the last 20 years I have been around pool (at least here in the USA). It's just not part of our culture, like baseball, football and golf. Pool is just a great was to pass the time.

I think the biggest reason is pool isn't really a spectator sport. The majority of players would rather be playing, not watching.
Steve

To me Pool is more exciting to watch than some good old boys driving round in a circle, like they do in NASCAR.

But NASCAR has the sponsorship.

Why do they only show women playing 9-ball on TV? I think the issue is sexism. Most of the women wear tight black outfits like Jeanette Lee. I have even seen Jeanette play in heels. The producers obviously believe that sex rather than the beauty of the game sells. I will acknowledge that the commentary & camera angles appeal to serious players.

I can't remember how many times J Lee has made a TV match in the last 5 years, but it can't be many... My point was that there is no sex appeal in women's pool... Outside of Jasmine, what Top Pro is good looking?

More that are not good looking than are... JMO

So showing the women on ESPN is a great waste of airtime for pool... Show the top men on a major network, I don't mean skins games and partners matches or just the COC...

I believe that we have a right to be able to see top players on TV

The women's division at the last BCA pulled higher tv ratings than the men's.

Has anyone else had the thought that bar table eight ball might sell? It's not my favorite but it's the game the majority of Americans relate to. Most of my non pool playing freinds need me to explain the rules of nine ball when we catch it on TV. That can't be good for the game's popularity.

That'd be WAY too slow for TV.

i wouldn't watch bar table 8 ball unless you paid me by the hour

Not even if AZB's favorite son (SVB) was playing

Like I said, It's not my favorite either. I don't even want to see it happen. I just think the general public might follow it a little better. Trustyrusty has a point. It can be painfully slow.

I forgot to mention that I have seen SVB play bar box eight ball. It was a lot of fun.

I don't doubt that a bit, but I still don't think it'll work on tv. Heck, most baseball fans won't endure a pitchers duel in baseball nowadays (not enough offense); no way a network would put a match on if it had a game or two of multiple safties being played. Heck, that's why the NBA has a 24 sec. shot clock, and let's guys travel like crazy, more offense, speeds up the game, and (though I don't totally agree with it) "makes it more exciting"....

Pool's little secret

I think PoolBum and Jallan have touched on the problem, but nobody who loves the game (most definitely that includes myself) wants to admit it -- pool is boring to watch. :(

I live to play this game; I've traveled cross-country several times just to watch pool played. But unless you're among the pool-nut-minority, as are most on this very special forum, it's just not exciting for the general spectator. Most likely never will be, unless a great gimmick surfaces.

And I think potential sponsors know it.

(I have no explanation for TV Poker.)

I totally agree, pool is pretty boring to watch, the sound/camera angles never allows the viewer to FEEL or properly HEAR whats actually going on. The sounds of a wooden rack and balls, the sound of an object ball hitting the back of a pocket, the sound of the cue stick, the look from behind the cue like your sighting a rifle, I watched the IPT lag of Earl and Archer the other night, they didn't even have a camera on the head string to show how close they were to the rail...these all need to AT LEAST be incorporated into the product, but..............DUH...heck Archer and Earl didn't even know the rules...what a joke, I turned it off after the score was 4-2 BORING.

I ask this question because as i sit here i cant seem to come up with a good answer. I'm asking you all out there to help me get a better grasp on the situation. Why is it we cant have a successful men's pool tour? I mean in my view the BCA does a better job of marketing and promoting their product. And that's for a amateur league. In the past i felt there were just to many governing bodies. I'm not so sure that can take all the blame now. Do you feel that its just not appealing to a large media source? Well whatever your thoughts i look forward to hearing them.;)

I think it is pretty easy to answer, it's boring to watch if you're not in to the sport yourself. Even then it can be pretty boring at times. Some of the players by the nature of their game make it even more boring (Souquet comes to mind).
Golf and bowling are just as boring (IMO), but they have large numbers of participants who it isn't boring to, as pool isn't to you or me. Pool just doesn't have enough participants and half of the ones it has aren't knowledgable enough to appreciate a well played game.

That's What I'm Known For.... My THINKING

" What's Wrong With The Game We Love? "

There's no Big Wheel.
........In order for this game we love to become accepted and beloved by players and spectators alike, you MUST have a Big Wheel to spin.... imo

YOUR WHOLE DIATRIBE WAS ABOUT YOU NOT PLAYING POOL. YOU ONLY WATCH POOL. NO WONDER YOU ARE BORED TO DEATH. YOU NEVER PLAY POOL. WHY DO YOU WATCH BORING POOL????? YOU LIVE TO PLAY THE GAME. THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.

Because most people are NOT going to take our sport serious when alot of the television programs about our sport is some guy lighting a pool ball on fire, masse around an army of balls, sinking the 3 ball after jumping throw a fire ring, after swallowing the ball, burping it back up and smashing it up 10 rows to a guy holding a BOOT.

Trickshot progams are not good for validating our sport. Sorry.:p
