What's the benefit of owning a cue vs using the ones at the bar?

Im still learning how to play, i dont even know how to control the cue ball, but i really enjoy playing and I see lots of players have their own cues, i want to have my own but im wondering if its too soon to buy one, i don't want to get laughed at because i suck

If you have the means and desire to purchase a cue then by all means purchase one. Just playing with one cue removes some variables and can help in the early stages.
 
Buy your own cue because it's a pain to find a good house cue in most bars.

Practice at a pool hall if you have one around your area, get real good, and take your cue to the bar.

Buy a nice sneaky pete so it blends in with the action

The benefit of owning a cue is that you are playing with the same cue every time you play - same weight, same tip, same balance, same feel, etc.
As to which cue to buy, well that is a personal decision as to what feels best to you. The general "for sale" forum here would be a good place to start looking. With a little luck, someone in your area will be on there and you can meet them at a pool hall and try out the stick they have for sale. CraigsList.com can be another source. It would be best to be able to play with a cue for a few minutes before buying it.

I've been preaching this for probably 50 years. There aren't two cues in the world that play exactly the same. Practice time is a waste if you aren't using the same cue. When you practice you want to be strengthening your abilities, not wasting time adapting to the new cue.

I like to occasionally practice with different cues, because playing pool, you have to constantly adjust to different conditions. Unless you play on the same table every time you play, you will always need to adjust your game. If I'm gambling, or playing a tournament I want the cue I am most used to playing with. But PRACTICING, I like to change things up, and force myself to adjust. Light, heavy, different diameters, tips. It all forces you to pay attention.

Get a "sneaky pete". They look like a house cue, but prevent you from being at the mercy of whoever maintains the wall cues.

If all you have ever used is a bar cue you should see if someone you know will let you try out theirs with a linen wrap before you buy one.

Personally I hate everything about a linen wrap from the feel to the look. Leather wraps feel good. Wrapless even better. Linen is just slippery, a dirt magnet and hideous.
