What's the better shot here?

Agree... black line.

I set this up on on 9' Diamond with hole reinforcers... attempted the extended red line to come below the 8... and the black line... and I was most successful with the black line for getting out.

I'd follow the Red Line track but I wouldn't try to stop above the 8, but rather have whitey continue to below the 8, playing it in the upper RH corner pocket.

Odds are I would have an angle on the 8 in order to get whitey over for the 9 in the lower LH corner pocket.

I'm with Dave. Shooting to end up above the 8 allows a nice smooth medium speed stroke with little if any spin involved.

I'd normally shoot the draw shot, but if forced to play the follow shot, I would definitely play to the short side of the 8. If the cueball landed back in its original position, it would be perfect. Anywhere the cueball lands on the slow roll shot seems like it would be tougher than I like.

Wow, lots of a great responses. Thank's everyone! Even though I still jarred the ball (for other reasons) I'm happy to know I'm on the right track in choosing my shots.

I had this shot last night in a set, the draw shot is actually really easy to execute and is one I opt to shoot often. Right english with a touch of draw for the 2 or 3 railer is not bad either.

I'm on the black line team also. But I did want to comment on the red line diagram. I believe (with all due respect) it is drawn improperly. I don't see the CB coming off the end rail that "long". I think I see it coming off as my following diagram illustrates (sorry, I don't know how to do the arc resulting from follow). It's hard to tell on a wei, and I may have it coming off too short, in which case the upper left corner is in play. In so executing this shot, coming 3 rails below the 8 is not a bad option. If you miss the 6, you're probably in a better defensive position, but with 3 balls left, you're still probably sunk against a good opponent.

CueTable Help

I also think the slow roll "blue line option" leaves the CB further down than the OP diagrammed, regardless of dragging. And if you miss the 6, it's almost surely asta la vista.

I'm still going with the OP's "black line stun/draw" though, every time.
