What I understand is that the red labels were the older version and they banked short and didn't play correctly.
The new blue labels have rails that are calibrated so they bank correctly and play more like a Gold Crown.

The changes involve taking the cushions off the rails, reducing the thickness of the sub-rails from 1 3/4" to 1 11/16" first. What that does is lowers the back of the cushions by 1/16" of an inch. Then because that also lowers the nose height by 1/16", the bevel of the sub-rails have to be changed from 21 degrees to 24 degrees to pick back up the nose height to 1 7/16". What this change does is it aligns the body of the cushion up better behind the nose, so that when the balls come into contact with the cushions...they go in and out more accurately, and with a more controllable speed coming off the cushions with the cue ball. The change also softens the grazing contact with the cushions when balls are on the way to the pocket but just slightly touch a rail on the way in...meaning they don't come off and away from the cushions as much which is what causes a lot of the rejects in the corner pockets.

ok I was always a I hate red labels...
I have to say I was a "red labels don't bank correctly" guy for a long time. however, I've since better understood what diamond was trying to do with that design.
Looking at the mistake most people make when using angle in angle out for banks and kicks I took a deeper look at diamond red labels and discovered something interesting about them.
it seems that diamond was setting out to make it easier to bank with them and it may be why some feel players preferred diamonds when they were ALL red labels.
On a red label, you can aim center ball right at the rail and the ball will come out at the angle it goes in, not withstanding different speeds, spin etc..
The only problem with that was that people couldn't adjust going back and forth between diamonds and other tables as easily because they banked so differently AND that it isn't as precise for the disparity in angles etc.
I'm glad that the blue labels were created I think it helps to create more uniformity in billiards, but I'm not as anti red label since discovering this as I have been in the past.
