I'm from Austin, and I currently live near downtown. I'm moving soon, but I'll still be in the area. Here are some of my reviews.
Short version:
Just go to Skinny Bob's.
Long version:
Skinny Bob's is the best room in the area, both equipment-wise and action-wise. They have 14 nice Gold Crowns, and a super nice 10' 3-cushion table. These are some of the nicest bartenders, waitresses, and staff I've ever seen. Lots of good players are regulars, whether you're looking for action or tough practice. Lots of 1-pocket, too. Smoking is allowed, but their ventilation system is very efficient.
I play an in-house league at The Grand (formerly Eric's). VERY nice people in my league, and VERY cool employees and management, but there is a lot of graffiti and the tables are pretty old. The cloth on the 8' tables is new but of the "felt" variety. The 9' tables have new Simonis. The balls are old, and some sets are badly mismatched. Fortunately, they have a separate set of balls for league matches, which are decent. No smoking.
Slick Willie's is an option, but you won't find Simonis on any table except their two 9' tables. The rails on those 9' tables could use some serious work. No smoking.
Click's is another decent room. There are two locations. The South location has three 9' tables, which are all pretty nice, and a boatload of "felt"-covered 8' tables, which are mostly decent. I don't know much about the North location. No Smoking.
I pretty much refuse to play at the Warehouse any more. It's just too frustrating. The tables are old and need major work, the balls are definitely in need of replacement, the waitresses only check on you about every 90 minutes, and there is virtually no action. No smoking.
In far South Austin, the Stardust may be an option. The 15 or so Medalists play very nicely. The only downsides are that it is more of a bar atmosphere, including the karaoke, the live music, and some of the patrons; also, a few hours there can be surprisingly expensive. Very little action, if any. Smoking is practically required, and the air is usually visibly thick with smoke.
Future Cues in Temple is definitely worth an occasional visit. They have about a dozen 7' Diamonds and four 9' Diamonds, all in very good condition. They have a flat rate of $6 per person, for unlimited play between 2-7 PM, any day, which is one HECK of a deal for nice Diamond tables. Smoking allowed.
I hope this helps you and anyone else moving to or through Austin.
