I'm sure everyone has different thoughts on this, and I'd like to hear'em: What do you like/dislike about a pool hall? What would your ideal pool hall have?

My thoughts on the subject:
Plenty of decent tables, and ideally a snooker table and a three-cushion table;
A decent selection of pool goodies for sale (tools/supplies/etc);
A decent kitchen;
A good selection at the bar;
Non-surly staff;
Good (and not LOUD) music (either just playing, or a good selection on the juke);
PARKING!;
Regular local tournaments/competitions.

Those would sum up my ideal pool hall aswell, just add a really good ventilation system and we're all set...

Nice avvy...I used it a long time ago to make a funny caption pic on another forum...LOLz...

The kid is asking if you're gonna eat your last two quarter-pounders....

Perfect Pool Hall

First off it would be owned by me with about 40 - 50 tables ( diamond and Brunns. GC ) 2 full size snooker - 3-C tables. A few awesome house pros, HUGE screen TVs around the place. A full menu of food - not just crap pool hall food. NO LOUD MUSIC or baby tables. I cant afford any of this stuff so Ill stop day dreaming now.

p.s.

And maybe a private back room where you could play strip pool with a selection of hot women!!

And local authorities that look the other way for calcuttas and sports boards.

30 - 40 tables 3 snooker 3 carom. Level tables nice cloth. Cheap bear, tv's at bars only, plenty of room between each table. good table lighting low ambient lighting. and pool players. a couple of private rooms. Low good music. good waitstaff, reasonably priced good food, cheap drinks, 10 cent wings. and my apartment right above it, with 24 hour access.

Good stuff; when do you open? I would only add: affordable pool time and NO talcum powder. One of Robert Byrne's books had a chapter on the "perfect pool room" with some really good thoughts; I'll post them when, and if, I can find it.

My ideal pool hall already exists in Tulsa, OK. Billiard Palace. It has:

17 Diamond Smart Tables

2 Snooks

A couple of 3c tables

I can't remember for sure how many Gold Crowns, but at least 15 or 20

A pro shop that's out of this world. The operator is a cuemaker (Petree Cues) and has his shop set up behind plexiglas walls in the pool room. He does all levels of repair, plus if you're bored you can sit and see exactly how much work cuemakers put into their process (amazing amount of work, btw)

Action 24/7 with everything from 3 ball runners to world class players

Decent food in house, burgers sandwiches, etc.

Great places to eat nearby (I'm talking within a few blocks)

The owner, Jim McDermott, gives a damn about pool and pool players and insures that his staff makes them feel welcome, whether they're a first timer, a banger, a regular, a road player, whatever...

Numerous weekly and monthly tournaments

Regular stop for the Midwest 9-Ball tour

Home of the Oklahoma State 8-Ball Championships

The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a 2 hour drive from my house... but it's well worth the drive and I make it on a regular basis.

Nice bonus, if you don't like the pool room atmosphere there, Jim owns another pool room 30 blocks down the same street, MaGoo's, that has 30 something tables, split between Diamond ST's, Diamond Pros and GC's... and their food is GREAT!

Later,
Bob

www.protymebilliards.com is a great example of my kind of pool hall. They have:

1. Nice people and great staff
2. Good Food and drink
3. Smoking is permitted, but if you don't smoke (like me), their air filters are top notch, so you can breathe in the place.
3. Excellent tables
4. Pro Shop
5. Knowledgeable staff
6. Good parking
7. Weekly tournaments
8. Comfortable environment
9. Good Hours
10. Excellent affordable prices

Har - well, kinda the reason I ask is, I've been pondering pursuing trying to open up a room. Where I live (Boulder, CO), there's really not any good rooms in the immediate area. The only place I know of in town that has 9-footers isn't a bad place in general, but every table they have is covered in drink stains, the lamps are falling apart, pockets are getting detached (i.e. balls fall out the bottom), etc.

Thing is, I have no real clue on doing such a thing, so I imagine it's just going to be one of those "Wouldn't be sweet if..." things. *shrug*

Pool Hall Favorites

Making notes on Stix in Calgary, Billiard Place in Tulsa & Pro Tyme in Orland Park (Chicagoland)...

Like all the factors noted earlier, but have one to add:

Good lighting on the tables!

Amen.

...and I've been to that place in Boulder, and you are being kind. It's not on my list of favorites, and didn't even have the devil-may-care spirit of Bronco Billiards in Austin, TX - another on a long list of places I've played ONCE.

Let us know if you do open something!

Amongst all the other things mentioned, I like a room with a good area for the sweators. Usually a raised area with good seating where you can grab a bite and watch the games. Railbirds should be comfortable too.

Ideal:

1)good equipment;
2)action;
3)railbirds;
4)snooker/3-cushion tables;
5)no or soft, tolerable music;
6)tournaments;
7)affordable;
8)separate area for recreational players;
9)over 18 unless with parental consent;
10)disrespectful patrons get kicked out;

P.S.: I probably prefer low-key on the decor because flashy stuff attracts bangers;
