What's your personal preference?

I've seen several threads on cue tips, joints, shafts etc. I'm curious as to what type of hit you prefer in a cue, from soft to stiff or somewhere in between.

What do you look for in a cue to achieve that type of hit in terms of weight, balance point, type of joint, taper of shaft, diameter, cue tip etc.

What are you currently playing with?

I prefer stiff hit, ss joint, 19.3-19.8oz, forward weight, 12.8-13mm shaft.

I play with a Jensen that is pretty much the above. :D

I prefer the hit of flat face phenolic, 3/8-10 pin, I like around a 12.5mm shaft, a lil thicker works, not to much either way really...moori mediums. I like it pretty light, my cue prolly ways >18.5 oz. and 59 inches

I prefer a very stiff hit with a phenolic or buckhorn joint and 3/8x11 pin. I used to play with a 12.5 mm shaft but I recently switched back to 13 mm and really like the feedback/stiffness a lot better. The cue I play with now has a pro tapered shaft but the one I have on order is going to have euro tapered shaft and compound taper in the butt. I like heavier darker shafts too. I also like a forward balanced cue that weighs about 19.5-20 oz. If the cue is wrapless I prefer a low gloss/hand rubbed finish (due to my slipstroke) and if it has a wrap I like it very slick. I also like the butt diameters of my cues to be around 1.21"-1.25". I like the length of my cues to be about 57". I currently play with an older Kersenbrock plain jane but I've got a Zylr SP on order:)

Stiff Shaft, Hard Tiger Tip, or HARD Multi-Layered Tip, 13mm, Faux Ivory.....

I prefer a cue with a wide body 3/8" spiral pitch radial pin. I think it provides excellent feedback of energy from the hit. A predator shaft and hard tip. Wrapless, and a slightly smaller butt thickness. Question is?... What cuemaker provides all of the above?

preference

I like a stiff hit, hard tip like sumo, and a 12.5 mm long taper. Light 18 oz - 18.5

rare to find all but when you do its heaven

I prefer a softer, but very lively hit. I like cues with flexible shafts. I prefer piloted steel joints, but not the heavy ones. I do not like cues that have heavy steel joints giving a forward balance. I play with a Bill McDaniel cue with a triangle tip. I feel like they are the best playing cues on the market today.

Well i like the hit and feel of a Espiritu with a SS joint, and a Moori Med tip.

Gives a stiff enough hit, and i like the balance of the cue. my playing cue is 19.1 and the one i use for breaking is 19.3

I like a SSF hit .....(Soft-Stiff-Firm)

Soft Joint - Phenolic or Wood (Flat Faced), Stiff Shaft, Firm tip...one that holds its shape but does not feel like a brick...

19.1 / forward / 3/8 10 flat faced wood / long even taper with NO (shelf drop) / 12.85 / Mori Quick....although I just hit a cue with a (I think) "Sniper" or "Tiger" tip on a Diveny (sp) cue that was pretty nice...

Currently playing - BCM with a lot of the specs above but too heavy 20 oz, and a linen wrap that is slick as ice.......(but it does have a great hit)

Futurely playing - Jacoby with the above specs...

My cue is a "John Minteer" custom cue. I have a one of a kind custom cue that is a Skruggs. [dig deep] I posted pictures of the cue I speak of.

Both play the same with the same tip. On a recommendation, I tried an Evererest tip. An Everest tip is great for a slow table ("bar box" table), but for the 9 foot fast table, I'll stick to my "Blue Diamonds".

Both sticks are forward balanced. It's what the Skruggs stick taught me and what I'm used to.

Your mileage may vary.

My only suggestion to you, is if you're to have a custom cue made, its to find a balance point that's functional to your height. i.e. the apex of the contact of your cue, to cue ball, (in a standard stance) will give you the desired contact point to complete the shot, during your normal (power) stroke. It can only make you more consistent, if that's what you desire.

A wise man said to me once: "Feel the power, know the power, respect the power, just don't rely on the power. Just be."

You asked for my opinion, I gave.

I like a very stiff, firm hit and a hard tip. The shafts on my cues are between 13.1 and 13.25mm, hard triangle tips on one and water buffalo on the other, pads on both. One has a 5/16 x 14 stainless steel joint, the other has 3/8 x 10 faux ivory joint. One is about 18.8 - 19.0 oz the steel jointed cue is about 19.25, both have LBM ferrules. Both cues built by Skip Weston.
