When age bites

played this afternoon, beat 27 year old 150 to 110 in straight. I don't run in the 30's anymore,
but did manage 2 13's and a 15 today. Still fun at 77.
Sometimes when I knock some 20something out of a tournament, I get a kick of telling them they've just been whooped by their 88 year old great-grandfather. That always produces a double take on their part, while those who know me play along with the woofing.

(I'm actually "only" 78, but when you're in your twenties anyone over about 50 might as well be 100. ;))

WARNING: Self-aggrandizing and whining follow.

I used to bowl. Then equipment fever ruined it. I'd go to league with two bowling balls. One for strike shots, and one that didn't grab the lanes for spare shooting. Guys would show up with six or even eight bowling balls. As the lane dressing broke down, I'd adjust with knowledge, line, speed change, and technique. Guys wouldn't change a thing; they'd simply pull out a different $200 bowling ball.

That soured it for me. I wasn't without some skill. 1994 Broward County Men's Champion. In the tournament, my first two games were 245, 259, 504 so far. I turned to my doubles partner and said "I have 800 in the wood." I KNEW I was going to do it. I was "in the zone". I KNEW I was going to shoot 300 the last game. 245-259-300. Thirty-one of possible 36 strikes. Twenty in a row the last two games. That was a good year for me bowling.

The situation with pool and equipment isn't exactly like that; players don't really show up with eight expensive cue sticks. But there are expensive cases, break cues, playing cues, jump cues, and some pros even have different cues for different games (e.g., Lion's recent "What's in the bag" video where he describes using different cues for, I think it was 1p, vs other games). But he's not your average Joe at the bowling alley compensating for lack of talent and technique by changing equipment.
Interesting! It’s nice to know that bowlers are like us. I had no idea you guys would come to the lanes with multiple balls. I suppose you guys collect them as well?

When Age Bites

Playing pool but….. At the stage of life when arthritis is killing the body. Eyesight is not great. Concentration and endurance are not there. Struggling to play like I use to but it’s not happening. Shots are wayyy off. I’m wondering if I should:
Simply quit and get rid of the table & cues
Try to enjoy what’s left regardless
Get the breaks and few balls(1P)
Go to Ask The Instructor
Go to my room
Start drinking and smoking
Join a senior center or old age home league.
Play left handed so I’ll have a better excuse.
I am 70 and can still play some (ok, a little). My problem is that I have lost my competitiveness, just don`t grind it out like I used to. This is a big change, I was not like this when I was younger.

I still love to play. My physicality is limited for the rotation games but I can still play some One Pocket fairly close to decent. So, I look forward to those matches and events like DCC and a few others. I'm turnimg 75 soon and if I get dementia/alzheimers maybe I'll forget how old I really am........LOL

Might be a good time take up 3c. It’s not so much taking the competition out of it. It’s performing like a drunk on simple shots/patterns. I’m working on accepting my age… like pool .. figure out the situation and work through it.

You had the best of times.
3c will be more frustrating.....jmho

Thanks for each and every reply. I just began to realize I’m human. But I’m considering a geezer league. Whoever is still standing and awake after a set wins😆

Got hurt 2x.
Threw my shoulder/arm out tryout to break like Godzilla
Hurt thumb badly breaking. After a good drinking session (was 18-19) as I broke my thumb caught my pants pocket. The pocket got ripped badly. Took the front of pants off. My thigh and skiv’s were exposed. Did a good job on the thumb. It was in a crowded room. People around laughed their cheeks off. Funniest thing that ever happened playing pool.
Had to be on a Valley

Just turned 70 back in November. Game is far from what it was when younger. I have always truly believed to bring out your game , one had to stay in action and practice much as possible. It was hard work being on the road during the Carter years. Still is hard work I presume . but during those
times there was less money around. I was born deaf in one ear. That bad ear kept me out of service when the Veit war was going on. I would have joined to serve my country but couldn't because of my ear. When on the road I played a speed that allowed me to travel all over the USA and spend a month or more in every major city coast to coast. That was a great thing for a young kid to do and see . Now at this age I don't have anything to prove to anyone except myself and truly that doesn't matter so much either. I am fortunate enough to have a nice table at home and practice 2 or 3 hours at a time and do that maybe 3 or 4 times a week. I do that just for keeping a bit of what I had intact along with the idea that just the exercise helps. Those practice sessions is like walking a mile or so and along with keeping focus is another benefit of staying active , I'm thinking it's gotta be helpful physically . I have a bad shoulder that the Doc wants me to have a complete reconstruction on. Because of that problem I had to give up Golf which I dearly loved along with my pool game. I have played golf all over the world including St. Andrews along with all of the other British open courses . Because of my shoulder I won't be taking up golf again. Have no problem with the operation, it's what this type of surgery will consist of. I can still pick up 70lbs with my bad arm, but wouldn't be allowed to pick up more than 30 after the operation. I can live with the pain, but not without full usage of my arm.
I can still get around on my pool table a bit though and every once in awhile I can still catch a gear and lay down a bit of serious pool, even without doing that, the moving around and thinking is good enough for me at this age and really thinking
that its good for us all . Just struck me, looking back over this thread. Most of us posting on this subject are really the heart of this forum. Just the idea and the point that Baby Boomers are probably the biggest segment of this forum.
We grew up in a time where there might have been 3 or 4 pool rooms in any small city and many more in the bigger ones. Now you a have much smaller amount of rooms nationally . Just wonder how less rooms will see an even smaller amount of players too keep the action going
on in the future. Sure was something to behold back in the late 60's and through out the 70's though , wasn't it.

Was on a beautiful White GC w/ashtrays...and gold cloth. I developed my love for the GC in that room.

I have a full shoulder replacement. It feels better than ever. Excellent movement/range, zero pain. The right doctor is everything. Good luck. It's never over.
Lately 10 lbs feels like 100 lbs. I had a Diamond Professional serviced. The mechanic comes by himself. I ask how the top is coming off...he says grab a neighbor or you can help... And I did against better judgment... but managed to do so without getting hurt. Never again. Not lifting anything over the limit. I love my new shoulder....also love my back and don't need any hernias.

While I know it's not good for my pool game, I do switch up my cues during the week. Have leagues on Wed and Thursday and only play with my Schon nowrap and Jacoby Ultra shaft on those nights as I just like the feel and everything about that cue. Then when Thursday league is over, I will shoot with my Schon leather wrap w/a stock Schon shaft turned down to 12.5 ish mm. Also, will shoot with My DZ and its stock shaft at 12.8 mm. I will shoot these cues till Monday or Tuesday morning, then switch back to my Schon nowrap to practice some before league.
Is it the right way to get better, no, but I have the cues and I'm not selling them as I really like them, and quite honestly, I really enjoy shooting them, and at times swear that one of them is going to be my main cue because I'm shooting so well with it at the time.
Nothing wrong with having multiple cues and using them all. Quite honestly it's fun at times to just grab a random cue off the rack to hit a few balls with. Will always be on the hunt for another nice nowrap though. Would like to try one of Coos cues someday.
Having a pool table at home is a real pleasure, while I don't use it to extent of some on here, it's always there to use when I feel like.

I have 2 Schon H4. I had a leather wrap put on each. Do not regret it but looking for an H4 No wrap. I loved the cues in that state.

I would venture to say it has nothing to do with age and everything to do with going over your fundamentals. Over, and over and over again. Day after day after day after day. Boring and drudgery is the price one has to pay for higher level play. All the rest is only "excuses". But some are satisfied with mediocrity. Nothing wrong with that either.

I had a straight pool league.
It was handicapped, race to 125. I played 2 of the guys 125 to 50, they never saw 40.

When Old Man Tony and Charlie played each other, they insisted on still playing one another to 125. We started at 6pm....they played to midnight! When I suggested they play to 100 if two players are the same handicap, they refused.

Both those men passed in the last couple years. My greatest pleasure was hosting them. There won't be guys like that to ever play this game as it was in it's prime.

No excuses others than my eye sight stinks and I feel like passing out a lot lately. As for fundamentals & performance I understand that’s on me … no crying.

Mid 60's I was spotted 25 to 50. Got reamed. I learned real fast...choose your company. Same with 1p. The shooter/run out player is the winner

I was working in Albuquerque in the mid-90s and got to see Jimmy Moore in his final years, slowed up a lot, had to hold on to the table to move to his next shot, but then, he would get down and his right arm would be like a teenager. Smooth as ball bearings in an oil bath.
