When? Cue tip replacement?

When is the time to replace the cue tip? I mean is there any minimun height before you start to replace it?

Some players that I know play with a very-very thin wall layer cue tip, close to a hair but they still can play good.

Its all in what you like, but to protect the ferrule, I replace mine when it gets about the side thickness of a dime. I also find playability diminished past that point also.
