I was watching a pro tournament, can't remember exactly which one, but I think it was the C of C's. It was being played on a table with tight pockets, and I was noticing that there were a lot of missed shots which got me to thinking, when the pros miss a shot, that we all know they should make, what are the main reasons. My 2 guesses were skid and side spin on the cue ball. I would be interested in hearing what you all have to say on this topic. It seemed like the players were jawing a lot of balls in the pocket, at least more than what would be normal.
 
Skid is one reason, but I think when they miss they typically have gotten out of line and are trying to have to do too much with the cueball or they try to cheat the pocket a little too much. Also, everyone misses eventually, no one is perfect.
 
Cheat the pocket. That is what I was looking for. Thank you. It just seemed like they were missing a lot more shots than normal. I was playing on a table with tight pockets yesterday, and got to thinking about it after hanging a lot of balls.
 
It seems like whenever I've seen Van Boening miss a shot it's because he was too aggressive in cheating the pocket...which he had to do because he'd gotten out of line.
 
They miss for the same reason we miss. Their attention wavers. They are thinking about shape while shooting, they get a negative thought in their head, they take the shot too lightly. They're human. Just like us. I have seen them miss ball in hand. I have posted this before. Humbling.

They miss for all the same reasons we do, just not nearly as often for any of the reasons.
-lost focus or took a shot for granted
-they stood up
-ball skid
-cheated a pocket too much
-shot was hard/not high percentage
-tried to do too much with the cue ball/put more focus on shape than making the shot
-got sharked by something
-etc
 
The answer I got for was that its almost always mental and very rarely. Cheating the pocket is easy for these guys, its when they are thinking negatively about having to cheat the pocket that is the problem.
