When to replace cloth

Playing at the rate you do, I would say your good for a couple more years. Your going to get, the odd mark no matter how careful you are. As long as it keeps playing true, it will be fine.

It seems the consensus among the comments is that, barring accidents, I probably don't have to worry about changing the cloth for a few more years. That's good news to me.

My thanks to all who took the time to respond.

Old cloth is sticky. It often has a lot of chalk dust which turns it into sand paper. That means that the cue ball loses draw very quickly on the way to the object ball.
Saw this in a major way the other day. I was checking out the new cloth I installed as a favor for the Senior Center. Put draw on the ball as I would normally do on my home table, and the ball came back at me like a shot. I hadn’t realized how much backspin I was putting on the ball to compensate for the worn cloth at home. I may have to reconsider how long I wait to redo my own table. It probably isn’t chalk dust since I keep it well vacuumed and don’t use dusty chalk at home, so is likely just thread wear. To answer the obvious question, six year old Brunswick Centennial at home, Championship Tour on the new installation.

Try this: clean your cue ball with Aramith ball cleaner and then apply paste wax or silicone spray like Armor All. That will give you the new cloth feel at home until the wax wears off.

(It's best to do this with a spare cue ball so you don't have to clean your regular cue ball after the experiment. )

I've been mostly a lurker on AZB forums for years. Now I have a question. How do you decide your table cloth needs to be replaced? I've seen many discussions of what cloth to use, but not so much on what condition of the cloth made you decide to do so.

I have a 7' Diamond professional in my basement. Bought it new in January of 2019 so it still has the original cloth. The cloth has burn marks, but doesn't seem to have excessive wear. I play for a few hours 4 or 5 times each week. From other posts it sounds like replacing the cloth is a little bit of a gamble depending on who you get to replace the cloth. I don't believe I need to replace my cloth yet, but I would like to hear from others what prompted them to replace theirs.

Thanks for you responses!
In a home setting simonis will never wear out. You might rip it or spill food on it and cause and issue but it will never wear out.

My 30 yr. old 760 had a few tiny moth holes, but still played ok (still rolled level also…..concrete floor), so couldn’t decide whether to spend the $. But, after I stood on the (3-piece slate) table while installing new light bulbs 🤦, stupidity thus necessitated a re-level/re-cover job, and made the decision for me. I also tightened the 9’ Diamond’s pockets (new cushions), but (go figure) the new cloth actually made the corners play easier. Wish I could say the same for the sides.
