I'm sitting here watching the NFL network on my TV at home its channel 128 and I'm thinking to myself, we live in a time when lots of people have over 300 channels to choose from so why cant billiards have its own channel?
If you included all billiards sports it wouldn't be hard to fill 24 hours a day on the channel.

Ive got at least 100 channels that I'm never gonna watch so if i gotta be stuck with these why cant we stick a pool channel in their also? Even if lots of people aren't gonna watch it?

I got a channel that just shows the Doppler radar 24 hrs a day for gods sake!

Seriously:

Green TV
Oprah's station(forgot the name)
DIY TV
2 history channels
Bio TV
at least 3 MTV channels
wealth TV
5 animal channel's
soap opera channel
at least 5 ESPN channel's
military channel
GSN ( old game-shows all day)
4 Spanish channel's

aaaaaannd...................30 music channel's that I'm NEVER gonna use. (thats what a frigging radio is for)

So when will we get a pool channell????

Idea

A Billiard's channel would be great. Just an a leapfrog idea, but wouldn't it be great if TAR could expand into this area.

As soon as someone who is interested in pool scrubs two nickels together. Which ain't happening anytime soon. Much better idea would be to make up a weekly show playing something folks can understand.....8 ball. Two challengers go at it in a short race. Winner goes at the champion for the right to remain king of the table. 13 week test run on Sunday mornings. Problem is, who is going to convince a sponsor to lay out a half a mil to pay for the production, travel, prizes, etc. ??? Answer ? Good question. What products are identified with pool ? Beer/Booze ? Not really. Better exposure w/ NFL. Coffee ? Maybe, but still a tough sell. Gambling ? Yes, but the number of players in the industry is definitely shrinking. How about PPV ???? Could we sell even 100K PPV's ? probably not. So, where does the money come from ?? How about celeb/pro doubles ??? Kinda like a reality show!!! Hmmmmm. Held in Vegas ? Dual sponsorship bt the Palms Casino and the Playboy channel. Now there's a PPV idea that might work!

It happened already. It was called The Billiard Channel and Billiard Club Television. The TBC took thousands of dollars from billiard related companies and came out with a 20 page website and proceeded to use the rest of the money for "promotion". Promotion meaning food, rent, computers etc. The Billiard Club was headed in the right direction but could not get enough together to actually build a network. (you need a ton of cash and sponsors) Although they did work hard in actually producing a product and it can still be seen today on some of the sports networks or via registration on thier web site. I think if Kevin T wanted to drop some cash into something he may want to give BCTV a call. He could sling his snake oil in the off hours. JAT

Well... if a petition gathering across the nation, showed up at NBC, with 20,000,000 petitions, asking for a Billiard Channel, the request might be granted.

The need has to be shown to the companies, that advertise. If there is no squeaky wheel, the idiots doing the advertising will continue to focus on the audience of their choice.

Anyone that does not have the fever thinks that watching Ping Pong (also known in china as Ping Pong) is more fun than watching pool. That is why we have to go through several grueling hours of tivo recorded trick shot matches to see a good match. The worst attempt at trying to make it interesting was the way the IPT only showed a couple of games out of a race, then would switch to some others playing. Supposidly so you could catch the last couple of games to see the thrill of victory. Oh and don't forget how interested the average pool player is in seeing Earl melt down... again... well worth the 5 minutes wasted there.

More likely, 'channels' as we know them will become less common as more content is available on-demand through the internet. TAR and others (Fast Lenny, etc) are doing the right thing, IMO, by going the internet route.

My ps3 plays video streamed from the net on my tv. It'll only be a few years until this is common for most folks, I think.

When will pool get its own tv channel?

hmmmm.......

When Ronnie Wiseman pays up?

When Kid Delicious eats a salad?

When Earl Strickland teaches anger management?

When Cliff Joyner starts a 401K?

When Efren stops winning?

When Kelly Fisher beats Brian White?

When Varney ships another cue?

When Kevin Trudeau tells the truth?

When Charlie Williams is invited into a girls room?

There's a good point here. TV's going to lose to the up and coming set top boxes (ps3, xbox, appleTV) and on-demand programs. (Hulu.com)

Anything that is successful has to be product driven. Other then cues and some nickel dime products made by companies who don't even have an advertising budget, pool has no products. Who is going to pay for the advertising to fund it? The truth is, the biggest money in pool is in the pool room business. That may sound like it is not true but it is and they are the ones who benefit the most in the long run. There are millions of pool tables in this country used every day in pool rooms. Could imagine the financial power they would have if they were organized? They could put on Half million dollar tournaments and not break a sweat. And if done right would not really lose money they would just underweight it. Heck, they may even make a profit, but that would not be why they are doing it. It would be to grow the sport and again in the end they are the real winners. It would also not be a flash in the pan, because they would be making it happen, not wishing.

combat pool or women's topless pool

Soon after they start playing combat pool or the women start playing topless and in tiny bottoms.

We gotta appeal to the masses! :D :D :D

20,000,000... now that's funny!

In all seriousness, there's no market for a channel here in the states. Overseas for sure, but in the US, not a chance. Besides, there already is a billiards channel. Its called ESPN Classic.

I get the point that it needs to be product driven, but thats what bothers, me. How much of a market can their possible be for discovery science channel? whoever the hell advertisers on that could surely advertise on the billiards channel.

and what about the music channels? theres not much advertising going on, on those chanells. And what about the goddamn doppler radar chanell?

If we can waste space with those channels then theire should be room for a billiards channel.

  This is where America really makes me shake my head. We the general public has no clue to the power we wield. The lone voice goes unheard, but the voice of the many resounds like a horn blown by the gods.

Okayy..a little mellow dramatic. but really. I think it is a great idea. You mean to tell me that out of the thousands of people that are on this forum. NOoo one works for Comcast or some other major cable or Satellite company? You mean to tell me that if the Azbilliards forum put together a legal and legitimate petition for a billiard channel and other pool forums did the same that those thousands of names would not raise the eye of some executive. We as pool players sit back and say "oh it won?t happen" or "It?s a lost cause" I rather fail at trying than have to admit that I never tried at all.

Here count my name down
Name ................City/State............Satellite company?......Cable company?
Tony Capers..........Richmond Va..........................................Comcast

Yes, I work in TV. Here's the problem, MONEY. It takes much more than a simple desire or idea to produce a program. You need a team of Producers to coordinate locations, players, refs, sponsors, statistics, etc. You need a crew to run the cameras, audio, graphics, playback, etc. You need a Director to run the show. You need a set-up crew, lights, monitors, etc. You need engineers to put it all together and be available if there is a problem with the equipment. And this is all just "behind the scenes." You also need a host and presumably a color commentator.

All of these people expect to get paid and they won't do it for minimum wage. Then there's the matter of finding someone willing to air it. The channels you watch are all owned by one company or another, most of whom buy satellite time to beam their programs to you. Believe me, satellite time is not cheap. And the companies who own their own satellite(s)? They make way more money selling satellite time to other companies than they would by getting a few sponsors for a Billiard Channel.

I'm not knocking your idea. Hell, I'd watch it. But this is the reality. It costs A LOT of money to even think about a new program.
