As a player in WA state, I have talked to many pool players that started playing more after the smoking ban went into affect, smokers and non smokers because they enjoyed the smoke free rooms and bars. Hopefully they will start showing up, good luck, Nate.
Group activities depend a lot on habit. You have to change their current habits with enticement to get them to stop going to the movies or bowling or something else and convince them of pool as an alternative. I truly think you can NEVER clean too much after having a smoking room. Non- Smokers will smell odors the typical smoker will never notice. This keeps non-smokers out of places that used to have smoke. I hear that all the time. Shampoo the carpet, scrub the walls, put out 25 of those room deodorizers. I have put out $100 worth of room deodorizers before and it barely makes a dent to some people. Definitely think the carpet holds in odors for years so that should be job #1. Everytime we get new carpet or have ours steam cleaned; EVERYONE notices how nice the place smells. Make flyers for free pool and put them on cars at close restaurants or venues to make pool part of their evening. I am working ten times as much on marketing and advertising as I used to just to increase business a small percentage ( That is NOT an exaggeration) I am on the computer 5-6 hours a day every day. Posting ads on Craigslist, MySpace, Stlpool.com, AZBilliards tournament announcements, I am stuffing envelopes to mail to other pool rooms, to previous customers. Hit or miss I am trying everything in the book. Yes it is working...but at a very slow rate. Business is up at my place over the past 3 months. This week I am mailing Tee shirts, Hoodies, caps, Pool coupons to our pool customers to keep them coming in and to keep us in their thoughts. For Christmas I am spending more on my customers than I am on my family.

We have a NO Smoking Law also in AZ, think it took 6-8 Monyhs before people returned to play pool. Many Bars now have Smokers Patios.

Smoke bothers me. I came home from the pool room yesterday and our son was there chatting with his Ma. I entered the room and he said, Dad, I can smell you clear over here. My eyes were stinging and my throat was dry. It isn't always that bad but I have seriously considered confining my pool playing to my basement. It would help if smokers had even a little consideration for others but they haven't.
