i think what so cool about pool over any other proffessional arenas is that the common joe blow banger can linger with the best in the world. in what other arena can an ameteur like you or i play in a tournament against the very best. where else can you go to a local tournament and sit down and talk with SVB or Thorsten or the Tourangeaus? i dont even think golf is really that way.

Many of the worlds top curlers are also league players in their cities of residence. And I suspect that most teams can enter the playdowns and meet these top pros.

Pool and golf are two such games where players from other game tries hand more often. Also there is no retirement age until your hands don't get started shivering.

You could always join Islesworth or Lake Nona country clubs outside of Orlando if you wanna rub elbows with PGA players. lol Little pricier than playing in the Derby or some other tourney though  :sorry:

Pro-ams

A number of sports have "pro-am" events, though they're often more "pro-celebrity".

In 1967 I had the honor of partnering up with Dick Weber in a pro-am event in Milwaukee. At the time he was considered the best bowler ever. I was a pretty good amateur at the time, boasting a league average of 227. In the tourney, I shot 624 and Dick shot 653...we finished about the middle of the prize list.

Amateurs are welcome in pool tournaments because our entry fees add to the prize fund :D

I think that's a very fair trade-off for being able test yourself against the best in the world.

Are there any other professional sports where the prize winnings come from entry fees of the players?

Poker is another one

Perhaps but most of the poker pro's, I'm not necessarily talking about a Phil Ivey or a Tom Dwan but the serious players who move to AC or Vegas, make more of a living feasting on the fishes who "think" they can play. Granted you can sit at a table with the Phil Ivey's, and hell they'll probably want you to, and attempt to "learn" from them but it's not going to be as cheap as the $50 or $100 buy-in to a pro-am pool tournament.

I guess it goes to show that every sport has its perks
Maybe not so much as far as money, unless your snapping off event after event

Yeah playing those carnival rotation games everybody seems to have regressed to. Let's see em hang with the pros playing real pool.

They'd all look like wounded pigeons playing Ralf Souquet, Thorston, John Schmidt, or any number of others playing straight pool.
