Where in the world have you played pool? What countries have you played in? Just thought it would be interesting to see where people have traveled to enjoy our great sport of Cueing!!

I have played in Germany, Luxembourg, France, Belgium, England, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Korea and of course the Good Ol' USofA! (It helps being in the Military to travel)

well i have been to TN. just when i was there i didnt have my cue at the time but had my wife and kids. and now and then family comes first. :(

P.S. i lost my first wife because i was playing over 10 hours 7 days a week. and on friday i would leave home and come home sunday night about 4:00am or monday early at 4:00am. i didnt want to lose this wife lol. so thats why i stoped shooting pool for 8 years. now she works so im playing again. just in Tournaments and i do practice for them about three hours before it starts. i know i know im not going to get any better that way. but its a start i guess.

This is what my friend Jose Apuan told me about playing for money in Manila:
"Don't play for money in Manila. If you piss off the wrong people, they will follow you, beat you and get there money back from you. You are a guest and are expected to be respectful."

Each time I visited Manila, I played in my tournament and avoided any gambling activities. I don't know if what my friend said is true, but it was enough to spook my interest. Manila is a beautiful city with many great players. As an outsider, I behaved myself and was ultra-respectful, and in return I had good experiences. (With the exception of the "cue incident" when I was playing Acaba). If I were to pick one place in the world that is the hotbed for bringing up the next generation of great players, it would be Manila.

what tournament did you play Acaba? was it just a local tournament or was it a bit international? What year was this?

It would have been in late 1991, around November/December. It was just a local tournament that I had attended with a few other American players. What happened was that I had just went up 7-5 in race to 9. I put my shooting cue down and go to grab my break cue and it is gone. It should be noted that I was on fire, making 2 balls on every break and getting out quite easily. Anyway, my break cue was gone and it rattled me enough to where I lost the match. After I lost, my cue magically reappeared. I was ticked off, but I know Acaba had nothing to do with it. It was a sad thing to happen because Acaba is such a great player that he probably would have won without someone hiding my break cue. (If memory serves, he ran 4 and out to win that match). Another thing that is probably worth noting is that rooms are extremely loud over there, in comparison to the European environment (where I had just returned from). It's not the type of playing environment that is easy to adapt to.

Acaba is a phenomenal player that has kept a low profile over the years. His break is tremendous, his stroke flawless, and from what I remember, he was lightning fast. Haven't heard too much about him lately.

Hi Blackjack,

Over the years, pool has changed significantly in the Philippines specially its image. Your friend might have been referring to the seedy pool halls which are full shady characters. That's used to be the image of pool in the Philippines. But ever since Efren became recognized in the world scene, the game experienced a boom and has a cleaner image now. You can see pool halls in almost every block in Manila now. And even young kids learning the game. I think as long as u dont go to those seedy pool halls, or you have some locals to accompany you, u can get a lot of action in Manila. That's probably why lots of pros have been going back and forth to Manila now. And regarding loud music, hehehe.. I agree that there are many pool halls that are loud, but there are also a lot of poolhalls now which has the right ambiance for pool playing

What parts of Alabama?

I was on vacation. I met a girl in California and she lived in Anniston. So I went down to see her later that year (1995). There was a place there with a handful of tables where we went about 4 or 5 times.

Well lets see: Ohio, Penn., Nevada, Ill., South Carolina, North Carolina, Indiana

Bingo! Now you'll understand the reason for that intense focus in the Filipino players. All great players from any part of the world can pocket balls, control the cueball with the precision of a surgeon and at sometime or another will recall and use a strategic move. But consistently delivering such precision cannot be attained without focus. Do you remember the movie " The legend of Bagger Vance" where everything audibly and visually unimportant to "the shot" just fades away and the only thing left is the pureness of the task at hand.

The dizzying array of motion and deafening noise in poolhalls here in the Philippines is a training aid that is hardly noticed in a positive way.
