That's worth a try. They won't need laundering for one. Soak in dishwater should do. Easily carry multiple spares. Probably should cauterize the ends.
Anyway, clean the shaft with magic eraser and isopropyl alcohol; the stronger the better. I use Ice synth car polish directly on the wood. You get the best results by letting the solids sink to the bottom and just applying a couple drops of the liquid with a folded paper towel. Buff if you like but allow a couple minutes to dry. Caution, this product can cause cancer in California.
