I was playing the other night in the basement when lightning struck close by and the lights went out. There I was, cue in hand, in mid stroke in total darkness.
A big gruff voice rang out, in my head, 'Where's the f'n 3?'! I had to smile.
When I was young an older grumpy guy, who knew his stuff, took a couple of us kids under his wing for pool lessons in his basement once a week. he would sit in a chair next to the table and room lights. One day I shot the one ball into the hole and the lights went out, total darkness, he had flipped the switches. I would then hear his coarse voice ring out, 'Where's the f'n 3?'!!. I took a guess and when the lights came on it was clear I was guessing. He then said put your stick away, you're done, you're just wasting my time. I would plead with him to let me stay, but I was done till the following week. Pissed me off, but after that I knew where the f'n 3 was. This phrase was just a metaphor, If you were shooting the 3 ball the lights might go out, and when he yelled, 'Where's the f'n 3?' it meant where was the 5, and you'd better know.
After we got a little better he would add to the phrase, and say, 'Where's the f'n 3, and where are you going to be? Me being the CB. I would say the '3' is on the short rail on foot end of table one diamond from hole, and I(CB) will be on long rail by side pocket. I once asked him, 'why don't you want to know where the 4 is. He said if you put the CB by side pocket on long rail it was obvious that you put it there because it's on the correct angle to get to the 4! So you KNOW where the 4 is! Didn't much care for his attitude but it was what I needed at the time!
