Which Custom to Buy ? **Help**

drivermaker said:
In EVERY "I need a new cue...what do you recommend" thread, all the custom cue junkies bounce in with their favorite names of cuemakers even when the guy says he wants a production model.

So, I think I'll reverse it and say..."Go production young man...go production".
Get a Joss, Schon, or Helmstetter
But I don't want to go down to the pool hall, and see someone who also dropped $1000 on the same Schon :p ;) .

You won't...most of those bastards are too cheap to even buy their lunch there. They sure as hell won't be spending that much on a Schon, let alone the exact one you have.

When I say tight budget, i'm in the area around $900 - $1000.00 USD. I was and still am interested in a Dishaw for the main reason that I can pick it up and meet the maker my self before any deals are done. I thought I would here more people recommend Dishaw being that he is the pres. of the cuemakers.....and of what he has worked on before cues.

I think I Read somebody telling me to go production, That doesn't interest me at all. I can understand why somebody would say that in order to get a good looking cue for a good price. But the looks of the cue is about 25% of the reason to buy it. I want to pay the extra money for the resale and also the feel/hit. If the cue arrives and I don't like it I can turn it over and not loose my shirt. In my head it is time to step up and upgrade the cue.

Anymore comments on Dishaw or Hunter would be recommended.

Thanks,

Greg

Read the thread about "getting a bad custom cue". I know it won't change your mind, but it's food for thought.

For that price range and that you're looking for a "plain jane", I'd go for the Scruggs.

Then definitely ...

I thought you would be less when you said tight budget. You can
definitely get a good looking cue from Shurtz custom cues here in
Wichita for that. Email Bob Owen like I said at Bob@Shurtzcue.com,
and he will send you pictures. (or just call Bob at 316-269-3844)

I have 2 Shurtz cues, like the balance and hit better than any cue
I have ever used. I have a $1100 cue (which was featured with 5
others on the cover of American Cueist Magazine in January '01), and
a $190 Sneaky Pete with SS joint that I use for breaking.

You NEVER give up do you. Man...if every company in the country had employees with the belief, dedication, and perserverance that you show on Shurtz cues...NONE of them would go out of business or be suffering for profits. Are you receiving a commission?

heres the move

scruggs if you gotta have something off that list.....pat diveney makes a great cue...mike stacey.....mike durbin...alll good cues for the money

No I don't ...

DM ... No, I don't ... Bob started as an adversary on Pool games, became
a friend, and I know and play with both of his sons, Robert and Gabe.
They are all nice guys, and Bob has really been turning out some good
cues, that's why 95% of the 'players' here shoot with them, and many
players down in Tulsa and Oklahoma City have gone to Shurtz (and if you know much about this area, you know Tulsa and OKC is loaded with players,
good ones). I know Oliver and Gilbert cues, and most of the national
production type cues, as well as other custom makers. I like Shurtz's
balance, feel, and hit ... better than any cue I have used. By the way, we have another cuemaker in town that also turns out pretty good cues, just parttime now though, Randy Anderson, ever here of Anderson cues.

This is my first post and probably the most important for me. I'm going to be purchasing my first custom cue with in the next 3 months and need a little advice on which maker.

There is only 5 makers I'm interested in and would only appreciate responses regarding them. I've been all over the net and cannot find anything that sways my opinion away from any of the following cuses. Which ever one I go with it will be very plain cue (due to a tight budget) with a wood (no wrap) grip. The makers are

- Tim Scruggs
- Dan Dishaw
- Hunter Classic
- ArnotQ
- Viattorre

The only cue above I will be able to try will be the Dishaw due to my location and the number of custom cues in my area (Ontario, Canada). Also the Dishaw I will be able to pick up and save the duties, taxes, and import costs if any.

All responses with personal experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Nothing against any of the cuemakers on your list, but you seem to be looking for opinions about Dan Dishaw's cues. You can't do much better than one of Dan's cues. He's not the President of the ACA for nothing. He builds a fine cue and is a stand up guy to deal with!

Before you do anything, take the time to

email Bob Owen at Bob@Shurtzcue.com
(Bob is Gabe Owen's father, Gabe is US Open 9 ball Champion)

I just talked to him and he has several nowrapped cues, and a couple
of used ones that you might be able to get a lot more bang for the buck.

Tell him what your price range is and what you want, and he said he
will send you pictures.

Shurtz cues are comparable to Scruggs for a better price.
shurtz cue are pretty cheap and they do hitt pretty good at leased the four pointer i had did.

Not going to order from Tim Scruggs himself, unless of course he's changed his mind about taking orders.

"Trying to catch up on all back orders and to stay on top of orders from
Lucky in Japan.

Thanks, Tim"

That was in reply to this email from me

"Rumor going around that your not taking any orders for new cues and going to
stop making cues. I don't buy into it, but thought I'd ask you first hand.

Thank you,"

i have hit with all of the cues on ur list and in my opinion they do not come close to the hit of a gina cue. if u want to play the best that u can use the best thats out there

I played a bit with a hunter last night. Cut through the ball alright - hit fairly stiff and had a nice feel. It had an average amount of deflection. I liked the weighting. I didn't really pay attention to the craftsmanship...just hit around with it.

Evidently the only people you'll need to fear are other people playing with a Gina, then you might have to practice. I guess that would put you ahead of most of the pros out there.

i would get a scruggs or a hunter.the hunters hit great and they are flat-faced which i prefer.harder to find a flat faced scruggs.i would not mess with arnot except for jump/break.
