ok, which is better as far as making a ball and getting a decent spread with a chance to run out:

A) the '1' Ball on the spot? (i assume this is the usual rack)
B) the '9' Ball on the spot?

thoughts posters?

One on the spot. Nine on the spot was a truly ridiculous attempt at compensating for the fact that the Sardo rack made making the corner ball so easy.

Unless you usually compete in tourneys where they rack the nine on the spot, it's hard tro imagine why you'd even consider it.

it was my understanding that the 9 on the spot wasnt a legal rack......way ive always been told was the 1 has to be touching the spot and in the middle of the table.

1 on the spot. That is where it will be in 99% of the places you will play outside of your home.

its not the rack thats going to give you a better spread............its your break.............

PRACTICE THE BREAK

Do you want to run out or to learn to succeed with the conditions under which nearly all tournaments are played? If the latter, then practice your break. If your only goal is the former, may I suggest loosening the corner balls as follows:

LOL: a feel-good picker-upper rack!

When the Sardo rack is in use, I have most times seen the players rack the 9-ball on the spot. However, I believe that at the UPA World Summit of Pool held at Grand Central Station last year, the 1-ball was racked on the spot, at least that is what it looked like to me.

At last year's Open, the 9-ball was supposed to be racked on the spot. However, I saw several competitors who must have not been present at the players meeting and proceeded to rack the balls in their matches with the 1 on the spot. Words of advice, ALWAYS attend every players meeting at all venues, no matter how familiar you are with the rules. I have witnessed many a player take a foul because of their unfamiliarity with the rules.

When I saw Shannon Daulton practicing at the Carolinas Open, the ONLY thing he did was rack and break, but never shot any balls in. After the crack of the rack, he proceeded to re-rack the balls and do it all over again. Shannon's break is one of the best in the industry.

Corey Deuel, though, is the master rack-and-break mechanic (IMO). Depending on the equipment, he's got a break in his arsenal that will fit the bill. When he came out with his trademark "soft" break, it was devastating to many a player; thus, a new rule quickly came to the fore that 3 balls must past the side pocket when breaking.

I'm not familiar with this rule '3 balls must pass the side pocket'. Who's rule is it? Just on the tour or BCA or ? What are the consequences?

Is it OK if they come back down table after passing the side pocket?

It's a UPA rule, put in at their first (2002) event in Hampton, VA to stop Corey's soft break. If 3 balls do not pass the side pocket it is a foul.

Did you make this image? I've been looking for something I can use to illustrate situations to email back and forth with a couple of friends.

Glad that ain't a permanent rule, else I would never be able to have a legal break!

Geez...pickier and pickier the rules these days...pretty soon us midgets will have to stick to circuses and clown acts...*smirk*

To which I'll add that you'll have to hit shift and print screen simulataneously to capture the image, which you can clean up in any paintbrush program. After that, you must save the image JPEG and not as bitmap if you want to avoid using a ton of memory.

Anyone wanting assistance with capturing a wei table image can PM me. II'd be happy to help out.

You can hit Alt + Print Screen to copy just the active window/message box. Just an FYI.

You're right, Zack, that's a slightly better procedure.
