I am in the market for a new case and I know the 3 by 6 whitten can stand by itself! The other whitten models can not. Does an 3 by 7 instroke stand by itself like the whitten? Does the 3 by 7 murnack stand as well? It really is getting pretty tuff to find just the right case but with Super Billiards Expo 2 not mentioned for this year I am really limited to looking on line for now. Any info would be helpful and much appreciated. Thanks in adavance.

IMHO You can't get much better than a Jim Murnak Custom. The quality of craftsmanship is second to none and they only get better with the years as the materials age great.

I wouldn't bother with Talisman, Instroke etc.

Jim is your guy for sure.
 
John Hager Sr makes a indestrutible stand up case that is really nice but a little heavy, He's moved from Texas to Georgia I think so google him as case and cue maker.

Almost any 3x6 and better with a flat bottom will "stand" on it's own. The real question is why would you want that? For a case to stand on it's ow unsupported it generally is then left in a space that leaves it open to being knocked over. I can't stand the thought of having another cue broken because the case got knocked over.

Now when I go to a pool room I find a secure spot to put my case that isn't prone to being jostled or otherwise bumped. Many here have posted about using velcro straps to strap their cases to chairs and there is one guy who sells a "case clamp" to clamp it to chairs and tables.

Personally I feel much better with my case leaning against a relatively stable object rather than freestanding. I know that this seems practical but take it from a person with 16 years experience in the case business, it's not practical or adviseable to have freestanding cue cases if you value your equipment.

On Murnak cases: what makes them so much better than everyone else's? I like to know if there are some practical things that he's doing that others are not?
 
thanks again for the replies. Here are some of my issues with this case thing. I am treating myself after rebuilding the deck and finishing some extensive landscaping work around the house.

First issue is what I call scrath and dent. I have several cases that are all scratched up. Expensive and cheap. I slap down 3 to 5 hundred on a case the thing better last for ever and look good just as long! You can search here and find numerous scratched up masterpieces!! They even have case makers that are "Reconditioning" the cases because they look so bad and have worn poorly. Most people do not have the time or desire to shine their cue case for some reason and that is me!! So, currently the best looking case after years of wear in my opinion is the Instroke Buffalo.

Second issue is getting the stick out of the case.I do not ever want to fight to get the sticks out of the tubes. To date whitten's springs are the way to go! Instroke does not have springs.

third issue is top strength. The early instrokes broke at the top handle and most people hold it there and lean on the top. so and extra strong top is excential. most whitten cases do not have a top handle. they just added it as a upgrade feature.

fourth stand at attention. I have had my case leaned against the chair and table so many times and had some one bump it over. I can place it next to the chair and when someone moves the chair the case is not on the ground because it is not resting on it!

Fifth issue pocket size. I play pool with keys and wallet in the way and they hurt leaning agains the table and when getting in your stance. So, I need space for keys,wallet & cell phone. Plus small amount of taper, bridge head, powder, chalk and cue slicker.

These are my major issues and why I want them addressed in a case. Right now I am leaning toward a instroke buffalo. because after market springs are available to tackle its one short coming. I really like the Justice super padded should straps the best but the cases are not made with the style leather of the buffalo instroke and whitten uses a different grade leather altogether that does not wear well you can look at the for sale section and see some beat up cases.

You could ask that question regarding cues also... and the answer would be the same.and that is ... Nothing....it's all about style and status....
 
I'm with John on this one. I wouldn't want my case freestanding. WAY too much chance of it being knocked over. I look at this like I look at people walking around with their cues sticking out of their cases. I gamble, but I don't take chances.

Didn't mean to start a "Case War" here. Just expressed my opinion that I felt the 'quality of craftsmanship' is up there with the best of them, or 'second to none' if you want to quote me. There are few really good cases available on the market, all around the same price range and none of them are 'so much better' then the next. As Smokeandapancak quoted, the rest really comes down to 'style' or what you personally like.

I quoted Talisman and Instroke because there are so many of them out there right now and I've compared the quality of the build of both with my Murnak and in my opinion, the Murnak is made with higher quality materials and simple things like the quality of stitching and hardware was significantly better.

Just my opinion. I'm happy for anyone here to disagree. :-)

No Ken it's cool. I admire Jim's work and he's been getting high praise all along by people with a lot of experience. I was just wondering if he was doing anything "extra" because if so then I want to be doing it too :-)

I always like to see innovation and feel that it pushes the envelope. I think any time a competitor/colleague does something good then it behooves the others to keep up which is ultimately a net benefit for everybody.

Jim has obviously borrowed some elements from Instroke and put in some of his own to create a unique style. I think this is great. Just as I borrowed from Jay Flowers, Joe Porper, and American Vinyl products to develop my own line and style. Joe Porper then complimented me years later when he brought out a tribute case that copied my Cowboy design. (of course it wasn't labeled as a tribute.) :-) And I have seen other case makers over the years who have borrowed from other aspects of the build I created so it's all good. Jack Justis is now using the cloth interior divider style that comes from Mike Roberts/It's George and is used on plenty of inexpensive cases that get a bad rap for having cloth dividers. I am going to do a cloth divider as well with a few twists and I expect to see my new features popping up in other people's stuff within a few years.

Anyway, no war, Jim has proved himself to be a master craftsman who isn't limited in style and scope. I, for one, am glad to see folks like him in the case making business. It pushes me to be better. And there is no better testimonial than a happy customer so I just want to know why you are so happy.

$2 worth of springs from Lowe's hardware did the trick for me.

Actually there is a SBE II this year. I'm not sure which day it starts but I know for sure Friday at the latest. I know this because I'm very close to a family member of AH.
I can't say if there will be any vendors there or not. I can try to find out though.

the Universal case made by Cue and Case and Universal Smart shafts are pretty cool looking for a commericial case.

Jack Justis cases still have a lasting flair after all these years too

I think you can buy just the stands from Joe Neilson. I think .I know you could 1 year ago but I just gave them away after a while.I decided to go with more cases of less size so I only need to keep a short eye on my case.When I had 3 or 4 cues in a case I was always on the look out for my case and it distracted from my game.I use a 2 butt 4 shaft case or a 1 butt 2 shaft case depending on my needs of a break cue or not.Speaking of the devil I have a cue with no extra shafts because a person ran off with the case and shafts.Now I limit myself to small outfits.ZZZZIIIPPP I got off the subject. I think Joe sells nice stands and I had one on a justice and a 2 4 Whitten and they worked fine.I prefer the rubber holder for my cues though as a stand over a case that may fall over or get fell on.
 
Thanks JB. Always nice to come across a guy who is a supporter of the industry and continuous improvement. After all, it's people like me who see the real benefit of it.
