Who do you think is the most well known pool player (among the general public)?

You people have league players mixed up with pool players...LMAO To league players, its a night out from home and the kids, no different than bowling night out with your friends. They limit their pool playing for the most part to the league night only, because they work jobs, have marriages, kids, mortgages, and can afford to buy cues pool players would never spend money on. Pool is not.their lifes passion, or their addiction like it is to "pool players" who by the way for the most part....wouldn't BOTHER themselves with playing in pool leagues as it's beneath them and their own view of tbeir skills. You always hear pool player knocking league players as bangers, but you never hear of league players knocking the Pro's, why is that? Could it be because pool to them....is nust a break from home, and a night out with their friends....and maybe THAT'S why they don't know who world class pool players are....maybe?

That's because League players are pool players. No mix up. They play pool, the support their local pool hall, they spend money, they buy cues and might even buy a table that needs to be installed. Some just take it more serious than others. I know APA 3's that know every pool player that lived, and I know down right good players that don't know who Johnny Archer is. So what, you don't have to follow the sport to love the sport or play the sport.

Plus, you can't blame them if pool is not on TV or promoted or run correctly. So, we can't really blame them for not following something that is tucked away in the basement.

admittedley there is a strong demographic component to the point of Efren's fame in the PI

short version....old and financially poor city folk know him well

outside of that, good luck

this forum often makes it out to be that pool is some big mainstream thing over there, I can assure you that it is not

Yet, its a sad state of affairs if the general public that don't have anything to do with pool....cant name at least one pool player? I'll tell you this for sure, you won't hardly find a league po player in them pool rooms and bars on Friday and Saturday nights....because they have better things to do, which is another reason why for the most part, league night is not on those days.

Yes, it sure is. Kids know baseball players because it's in the papers, on the news, and a popular video game is MLB so you learn the names and stats of all the players in the league. I follow baseball pretty closely, but my son knows more players because he plays the video game a LOT :)

Yeah, but I would actually prefer league night on Fri or Saturday, no rushing to get home, no staying out late and getting up early the next day. I would LOVE that.

what's worse than the general public not knowing are league and tourney players

and it's the norm not the exception

a decent local talent the other day couldn't mention anybody other than Johnny Archer,

an old timer who granted is quite stupid but none the less and playedf or 50 years mentioned Mosconi and that was it

another old timer I see on occassion mentioned minnesotta fats

very sad

Amen. I completely agree.

But then the bars would be losing .money if they had leagues on Friday and Saturday nights by having to open the tables for free play, no other PAYING customers could play...and they don't eat or drink like the normal weekend croud does....THATS why league nights are during the weekdays

Oh I understand the economics of it .. just selfish wishful thinking.

Not even sure how it started.
But I've lost money about five times betting that a 20 - 25yr old apprentice would know who Minnesota Fats was.
They didn't. I lost. Done with that bet.
Disappointing.

Contrary to what some are saying here, Efren "Bata" is well known in the Philippines, as is "Django" Bustamante. They are better known by their nicknames than real names. Both have long been featured on posters and ads for San Miguel beer.
Very good friend who goes there for months at a time agrees with u Jay.
......
I may never get there but...
I have asked quite a few cruise ship workers from the Philippines about Efren.
They knew him for sure.

Are their any video pool games that let you pick from a list of pro's or has there ever been? Asking because I don't know. I see people playing virtual pool on cell phones. Not sure if they play themselves or pick a player.

Pool or cue sports does not have personality who has global appeal amongst general public like Pele, Beckham, Ali.
If there was, pool would be minting money

Was Minnesota Fats a pool player or just a player?

I think Donald Duck achieved some billiard fame years ago.
