Who doesn't like soft-hitting cues?

I play worse with a soft wood to wood joint. I believe I have proven it to myself... From a southwest to the cheapies; my play is just worse.

Maybe I'm biased because I grew up playing on an oldschool fat screw brass joint. Very hard hitting forward weighted cue.

Seems like all the high end cues I'm seeing these soft wood to wood joints... I've been selling off all the cues I have lately. I'm just going to use a $15 cheap brass joint with a decent shaft from now on.

Wood vs. metal is part of a person's set of choices and your preference is a valid as anyone else's, but I don't agree with you that wood=soft and brass=hard. And Southwests hit soft? Not in my experience. Maybe others will disagree with me.

I see no reason not to use a cheap butt with a brass joint and a good shaft if that is what you like.

I like playing with wood-to-wood joint and wood-thread, but don't like soft tips.

I dont like metal joints at all, nor do I like dead feeling cues, you dont need a metal joint for a solid feel, the Ray Schuler I have is a testimate to that, and may very well be the hardest hitting cue Ive ever owned.. No matter what tip was installed, it hits hard. Yet easily you can manuver the cue ball...

Most super stiff cues Ive owned, you must apply more force to get the same spin as other cues, me not ever wanting to SLAM a ball this is bad.

Schon, is about the only exception, even with the stainless joint, the cue is very responcive and its very easy to move the cue ball around the table..

So really Im not looking for "HIT" but cue ball reaction.. because some cue's hit hard but lack performance, as well as some cues hit soft, but lack performance.. Ive found that the softer hitting cues, lack the sound, that positive sound that you know your striking well, I think this is why most people dislike soft tips.. I find that any cue I can feel the weight of the cue ball on impact useualy performs well....

I dislike stainless joints because they are distracting to me, in case your wondering, it has nothing to do with the hit...

I remember this from someone's signature:

It's not the cue. It's YOU!

well yes, it is me. but functionally, for me to play well, i need a extremely hard hitter... thats all i'm saying. the hardest joints (to me and yes this is a matter of opinion) are the huge clanky brass ones. they are ugly, but its what I've found that I play the best with. I think that the hit of them puts me in a better mind-set due to using one as a child... sorta a psychological positive childhood experience thing or something.

i didnt know if other people had the same problem or if i'm just chillin on my own island..

ive been having a similar problem. my first cue was a cuetec, yea i know. then i got a predator sp that i have been playing with for a few years but a while back while i was getting a tip put on the predator i picked up the cuetec to play and played better than ever. since then i have not played well with the sp and in fact ive been playing better and better with the cuetec. the predator is wood to wood uni loc with no collar, the cuetec is whatever plastic stuff they use in the joint. guess i have to play with the cuetec for a while no matter how much it breaks your hearts.

Cant you just adjust??

I prefer flat faced wood to wood which is what I'm using now but I had to use a steel piloted jointed schon for a little while which only took a little bit to adjust to. Maybe a week to get used to it?

"had to" use a Schon???? Oh, what torture that must have been! (just joshin') :D

Am I missing something or did he say that a SW had a soft hit???

A SW is about the farthest thing from a soft hit... Maybe I read his post wrong.

Wood to wood joints with big pins play great with the right taper. The pin itself will effect the hit less than the taper, ferule, and tip will.

Problem is he's equating hard dry no feedback hit to hard hit.
I dunno what hard is for if the cueball is staggering coming out of the tip.
Hard to me is stiff hit with a ton of action.

i play pool because it makes me happy/satisfied. and i feel more satisfaction playing with this type of cue as i stated in an earlier post. to me, a hard hit is more relative to the sound the cue makes and the vibrations. one could easily argue that this is more relative to tip/ferrule/shaft... but i have noticed a trend. the trend is this particular type of joint on numerous cues gives me more satisfaction playing.

it must be like girls ridding on horses or motorcycles, but its not, but it is, but it's not.

You like a heavy weight forward cue, I get that, is it more the balance or the hit? what I mean is a cue will only hit so hard, no matter what joint type it has, the balance is really what affects my game the most.. it just the way the cue feels in my hand.. The taper also plays a part, as well as the tip, and ferrule.... Im just trying to understand what it is that is making the differnace... the balance or the hit?

mostly the vibrations and the noise. i guess i just wanted to see if i was alone on this point of view. i'm playing on a wood to wood joint currently, but i have more fun and am more strategic and in the zone with using a clunker. i just shoot on them at home, mainly bc i like to bring a nice cue out when i play. and and yea, thetaper is huge for me. i can't even begin to play on something without a massive taper
