Billiards Digest continues to bring the best of the best in the world of pool, and one name you’ll be hearing more and more is Jesus Atencio.
Atencio is quickly becoming one of the most exciting emerging talents on the professional scene, particularly on the World Nineball Tour. He turned heads at the Florida Open Pool Championship, where he battled his way to the Last 16 and delivered a statement victory over world champion Fedor Gorst. That win alone elevated Atencio from promising prospect to legitimate threat.

Having spent time living and competing in the United States, Atencio has been steadily positioning himself for bigger opportunities, sharpening his game against top-tier competition and gaining valuable international experience. There’s little doubt, Jesus Atencio is on a clear upward trajectory. His confidence, shot-making ability, and fearlessness against elite players signal that he’s not just part of the future of pool, he’s arriving right now.

Atencio’s A-game is very solid, but he is very inconsistent and is not a great finisher. He is a quality guy who presents himself gracefully and has a good attitude, but I will be surprised if he emerges as one of the World Top 25 as measured by Fargo. Hope I am wrong here, and I hope that, if he wins a major, I am there to shake his hand. Wishing him the best!

I agree here, great guy but second tier when it comes to the super elite end of the money list.

All true, but, I'd still prefer him on the MC team than the other picks. Europe is many countries, Asia is many countries, I see no reason why we can't have all The Americas, Canada, and Mexico, just saying... LOL

Yes, Jesus Atencio and fellow young South American Garson Martinez both deserve Mosconi consideration.

Do you rate him above Skyler, Tyler & Billy? Cause I do.

Atencio’s B-C game is not world elite level but he is fearless, accurate and can definitely handle pressure. And he is really crafty with the jump cue! On his best day he can beat anyone.

It would be interesting to see Jesus match up with Skyler, would certainly make a great match.

I may be wrong, but I've got a feeling the Billiards Digest cover story entitled "Star Power" is shining the spotlight on Jesus Atencio for a reason. He checks multiple boxes and is the full package, having game, confidence, charisma, and personality to match.

Pro pool is hungry for players like that, ones you don’t just watch, but follow. Showing up consistently on tour and going deep in events proves he’s not a one-hit wonder. And let’s be honest, charisma matters more than people admit. The sport needs players that fans can truly connect with. Fans gravitate toward that human side, too, especially when family is part of the picture. Like Jayson Shaw, Jesus is balancing the grind of a pro career with family life. That’s something I respect and love to see.

And speaking as a female, he’s also very easy on the eyes. :)

Whether it’s confidence, presence, or, yes, even looks, it all contributes to how a player is perceived. We need more players like Jesus Atencio. The USA, in particular, sure does. I can count on one hand how many so-called “pro players” we have right now who are fully committed to the global grind. And let’s be honest. Some, for reasons that are their own, just aren’t chasing every event and those all-important ranking points anymore.

That’s the reality of the sport. Pool is still a rich man’s sport in many ways. The payouts, compared to the travel and expenses required to compete full-time on a global level, just don’t cut the mustard. That’s what makes players like Jesus stand out even more. He’s showing up, putting in the work, and embracing the grind.

I’m genuinely delighted to see he made the cover of Billiards Digest in April 2026. The timing feels just right, and honestly, it feels earned.
