Who is responsible for money owed?

This just came up in our local Facebook pool group, which is very active with thousands of members. Here are the details as they were presented:

-The player is known for playing big money games/sets. Like 300 minimum/game.
-His opponent is a guy he's played before, and gets in action a lot.
-Opponent says the same guy is backing him as the last time they played.
-Opponent loses $2K.
-Player reaches out to backer to collect.
-Backer says he only gave opponent permission to play for 30/game, and offers to pay the player based on that.
-Player wants his 2K.

The question is, who would you say is responsible for that debt?

Player is always responsible.

This group must not gamble much……

Also who played for 2 dimes on the cuff? And doesn’t know the rules of gambling?

Learning to manage your action is the real topic here. Then there’s never who owes who what.

I’ll leave it at that.

Amazed that this is even a debate in the FB group.

How can someone lay responsibility on another guy like this....? Now if that backer was the guy making the game. That would be a different situation. However that doens't seem to be the case.

Foul on the guy who came out on top for now confirming the wager with who was suposedly going to pay him

How can you play for that much dough and not have it "up on the light" before you start?
There’s a handful of people in pool I gambol with that we don’t post for lots more than that.

However it’s with people I’ve known for decades and have gambled with a lot over the years. That’s the only exception. That’s earned both ways-not given. 95%+ of my action is posted money.

I’ve never had a problem or been a problem. Established people who gamble high all the time and know the ropes.

This “group” of keyboard warriors(so it seems) can’t figure out who is responsible-might have to post double with me-insurance. Lol

The world has changed...

Last series of "cash" match ups I played in (comparable bet) were electronic transfer after the tally was finished. Yes, there's a heavy reliance on the honour system, but in this day and age of social media. You're only pulling a move once before being backballed. I didn't personally know my opponents, but we knew common folk.

Yes there's a risk but hey, they call it gambling for a reason...lol

Is this a trick question?

The player is responsible.

The action is between two players. Any agreement between a player and their backer is just that, an agreement between them.
I agree with this.

As posted above, always post the bet and there will never or rarely be an issue. I've learned over the years that if you get the money out of their pocket, it is so much easier to put it in yours. When someone "posts", they have made a mental decision that they are willing to lose it. When the money is still in their pocket, even after a loss, they still feel "ownership" if you will. Now this isn't across the board with everyone, but in general and especially when people are drinking or the stakes are higher than they are comfortable with. Everything considered, it is just good policy to post when gambling.

Good reason to have uninvolved third party, like Escrow, hold money from both players.

Then pay out winner. Must be nice to have those fund to gamble with.

I bolded the part I'm responding to. The group is pretty heavily agreeing with you (and me). Only a couple of votes for the "backer" being responsible.

The two guys have matched up plenty of times before with no problems.

FYI for everyone, one of the only "backer is responsible" comments was from Mr. Jason "Buffalo" Hunt. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Good customer sometimes gets a discount. Depends on what they want and the odds of them donating more in the future. The big fish in the Seattle area sometimes got a discount. Well gee whiz he was supporting a corporation of players.🤷

The guys thinking it’s the backer are just new to gambling is my guess. We all had to learn the ropes. Hopefully they learn. Always like ur posts E, your good with me! Set these guys straight. 😉

The discount program!

Excellent. I love that plan. However that’s next level for these guys.
