I've played pool all my life and mostly for money in my earlier years. I liked to play and win more than I really liked the money, but money usually kept the game at a bit of a higher level because most people won't play for money unless they can play a little bit.
I never, EVER, hustled anyone. I would play my best, no matter who I was playing. I can't count the number of times, I've ran the table on people who could barely play without giving them a chance. I am of the mindset that there is a time to play and a time to instruct. If you challenge me, we are "playing"...it isn't an instructional session.
With that said, when I gambled I didn't mind playing for just a little bit of money because it let lots of people in the game, where playing for a lot dissuaded lots of people from even trying.
I had rather beat a good player out of $100 at $5 a game, then beat him out of $100 at $50 a game and have them quit. I can't count the number of times I've won hundreds of dollars in $2, $3, and $5 ring games. I used to steamroll people and beat them 3 and 4 games to one. If you do that for the big money, they will never play you again.
Playing for BIG money doesn't mean you are a great player...it just means you like to gamble. I see lots of idiots shouting out "play for this, play for that"...blah, blah, blah...all they are doing is standing around shouting while the rest of the pool hall is playing pool.
Winning should be the goal, not the amount of money won.
