Whos the greatest cueist of all time Willie Mosconi, Steve Davis, Efren Reyes, Raymond Ceulmon (sp?), Willie Hoppe, Stephen Hendry, Wimpy Lassister, Stephen Hendry or Walter Lindrum?

If I have missed anyone that you feel I should have mentioned then feel free to yell at me.

Walter Lindrum. Followed by Hendry, Mosconi, and Hoppe.

Most talented however would have to be Ronnie O'Sullivan.

oops I didn't mean to repost this thread. The one with the poll is the thread I wanted to start. Mr. Wilson if you would be so kind to delete this thread, it would be much appreciated.

Ceulemans is ahead of Hoppe, both in dominance of the sport and the range of games he played. I think he also gets the nod on longevity, since he won the 1963 and 2002 World Championships at 3-C. Hoppe's 3-C career started slowly and he was never as dominant as Ceulemans at it.

I don't consider Ceulemans ahead of Hoppe, okay maybe he was more dominant at 3-C, but Hoppe was no slouch, from the 1930's to the early 1950's he won 11 World 3-C titles. I give Hoppe the nod in longevity with his first 18.1 title in 1905 and his last title (3-C) in the early 50's. Hoppe also pretty much dominated 18.1 and 18.2 balkline from 1905 until 1929.

Also a couple of feats come to mind: Hoppe ran 622 in 18.2 in 1912, incredible at that time. Also a run of 25 in 3-C on those unheated tables is equally impressive.

I don't know why 3-cushion players are mentioned. By cueist I assume you mean all-around players. Efren Reyes would be the first pick, then maybe Harold Worst and Nick Varner or Mike Sigel.

Good point!...cueist would refer to all around IMO. Otherwise you would have to list "who was the best" in every single game...

My nod would obviously go to Efren...

efren reyes is the greatest all around cueiest that ever lived. he is the best in the world at: 9-ball,8-ball,rotation,one pocket, straight rail billiards, and i heard he beat world class british snooker stars at snooker! so, with those qualifications, no one soul can come close to efren reyes as the greatest.

I'll go with Lindrum.

Ok...I know I'm gonna get blasted for this, but.....I know that Allison Fisher was ranked #5 in England at one time in "cueing" (men and women). Thats pretty impressive.

I think a strong case can be made that, with the emergence of all the super-talented young Asian and European players, pool is now being played at the highest, most competitive level ever. For one player to dominate in even one game discipline is remarkable when you think it through; just look at some of the recent relatively unknown players who are making their mark: Manalo, Orcullo, Kiamko, Wu, Groce, etc. Plus, with all the video learning material and expert teaching instruction available, young players can speed up the learning process immeasurably. In spite of all this, Mr. Reyes just keeps on kickin' booty, from one generation to the next, TOTALLY dominant in 1-pocket and rotation, close to dominant in 8-ball, at or near the top in 9-ball for 20 years, very competitive in banks and 14.1, and enormously talented in 3C and snooker (if he were to fully apply himself to these 2 disciplines, I would not bet against him being dominant there as well). Based on his career performance, longevity and recent performance at the DCC and KOH tournements, Mr. Reyes has my vote. We may not have even seen his best pool yet, and that's scary.

This list gets more outrageous every time someone mentions the games Efren is "the best" in. You mentioned:

9-ball: Not sure his record really backs up this claim. He's certainly one of the best, but I would say there are better 9-ballers, Earl Strickland included.

8-ball: Yeah, he's probably about the best there is at 8-ball.

Rotation: Go tell Jose Parica that Efren is the best rotation player in the world, and you may have a fight on your hands.

One pocket: This is the one game Efren truly dominates.

Straight rail: You have to be kidding me. There must be dozens of straight rail specialists better than Efren. Among POOL players, Efren is a great caroms player. Among billiards players, I think not.

Snooker: "You heard he beat..." Yeah, I heard he ran 1000 balls at straight pool, 20 racks of 10-ball, and three 147s in snooker, all back-to-back, and then shut out Garry Kasparov in a race to three in chess, spotting Kasparov two pawns and a bishop! But it didn't happen.

But I still think you can't put him any lower than 3rd place or so on the greatest players of cue-sports of all time. I'd probably put him at #1.
