I'm fairly new to the game, so excuse my ignorance about a fellow nicknamed Upstate Al.

He did great commentary at SBE and Steinway Classic. Very knowledgable and funny to boot. He reminds me of Click and Clack on the NPR car repair show. His Boston accent really cuts through the clutter.

Who is he?

Don't know where you are from, but I can tell it's not Boston or a place where lots of Boston people hang out LOL.

He sounds more Southern to me. Me is from Boston (or at least I lived within 30 miles of Boston for 31 of my almost 42 years)

Boston Accent? That's a good one  Upstate Al and Mike Fingers are always good on the NY area streams. The Devil Dog, or Devil Dave, needs to go. The kid needed the hook real bad too.

There was a kid doing commentary at Steinway also. I think his name was tommy or timmy he was very knowledgeable about pool and did great commentary.

Youngest player in the field (14) has only been playing for a little over a year but says he "wants the experience of playing with champions." He played in The Classic too. He was on the TV table as well.

Upstate Al is one, of many, great people involved in this sport who give back generously and do not expect anything in return.

Yeah, I'm from the Midwest...so anyone east of Pennsylvania sounds like Boston to me. :D

It's OK, everyone in the midwest or south sound like they are from Georgia to me hehe.

Except Texas, they have their own accent thing.

Odd thing is that CA, AZ, and those area states... sound pretty much the same as the folks on the East coast. When I was in Nevada, did not hear anyone there with much of an accent to my ears.

Nice looking kid.

What's he doing playing pool??:wink:

From the first shot he had, shooting a kick with a bridge with spin and left the cueball safe, he does not look like he's been playing for only a year. Take a bit of seasoning to know to even see that shot much less execute it with the right speed with a bridge. I'd say 2-3 years if not more. Maybe he's been playing tournaments only a year?

Thanks for the link as well, I know what I'm watching at lunch today.

Just watched more of that match with the 14 yr old, he plays like my son LOL. Great shooting till the last 2-3 balls then he lets the other guy take the win. One league match my son made almost every single ball but lost the match 4-1 because he missed the 10 ball or scratched on the last ball or something. The opponent made maybe 6 or 8 balls in 5 games, and that included the 4 game winners. He would have won the match with the other guy making 2-3-4 balls TOTAL if only he could keep the focus at the end of the rack. Excacly what this youngster did also.

I watched a lot if the Ginky Memorial this past weekend. I like Al quite a bit at a commentator. Has good knowledge and the most passion for the game of any commentator I have heard.

When Thomas (the kid) got on, my initial reaction was "wtf?" After a minute he asked the chat room "should I stay on or not?" My contribution was "Only if you give us Minecraft tips." :@)

But he won me over. He slid right into the commentator chair and did a good job.

But the best was the winner of the 10 ball amateur competition, michael yednak. That guy's a natural. He was analyzing every position, pulling color commentary out of a quiet Stevie Moore, changing camera angles as needed and only as needed, and going through sponsor mentions like a pro. Good job.

I also enjoy listening to Al. Haven't heard Yednak yet, but now I will look for him.

Boston and New York accents are very different. When I moved down south some years back I recall being at a seminar and the speaker enlightened the audience that he was from the Nort East. Right away I asked him what part of Providence, RI he was from. Turns out he was from the Federal Hill section. Years later I bumped into him again at a function and I addressed him as " Federal Hill ". He couldn't believe I remembered him and he even remembered the incident. Long story short, Providence is forty miles south of Boston but the nasal twang of the Providence crew is a dead give away.
