Who Knows The Answers about J.French?

Mr. French goes around "signing" several top players (Daz, Shaw, in addition to Orcullo and both Ko's, among others) to be in his "stable" of players. To what end, hasn't been exactly made clear.

Sounds like Barry Hearn signing up his Matrchroom crew to sell snooker to TV. :D

Paid £25 a match, Davis toured the country, taking part in challenge matches against established professionals.

Sounds like French is doing similar through PPV.

But I know nothing about American pool.

Why does it matter what they are playing for or who stakes them? Do you really purchase matches on that criteria?

I know that the Ko match was for a way lower amount. The reason it matters to me is I like to see these guys play under a lot of pressure. That's the hook for me buying PPV. I want to see a guy playing for 50k and see how he performs. If it's advertised as a 20,000 match but it's just play play for fun, I'll just ask someone who won later

I'll have to agree with Mark here.

The bet doesn't matter to me as long as it's their money and they feel it. Freerolls are tough because at the end of the day the stakehorse is the only one who feels the sting. Well, that and the player doesn't get money, but they also didn't just lose money either.

I'd rather watch 2 guys play for $20 on their own money then a funzies "everyone gets a participation ribbon" match.

One of the things I like about a local player and friend is that he's bet his own so much it's crazy. And he isn't hurting for people to put up funds for him. Seems to play real well on his own, and he isn't playing any matches where everyone gets something.

Only newbies and groupies like to see exhibition matches.
Otherwise, that crap is BORING.
No way anyone in their right mind is gonna pony up for an exhibition match after the truth about the hype comes to light.
Only reason to keep hush hush about exhibitions and trying to hype it up as a real $$$ match is to try and snap off anyone on the rail who is stupid enough to bet.
Granted, there are plenty of stupid people to go around, but even stupid people wise up when you are blatantly obvious about your con.

But it's all good.
Couple of years from now, French will be a name from the past once the players cut him up every which way and leave him on the side of the street like a piece of fresh road kill.

You guys want action?
Someone make up a betting pool with over and under windows for how long he will last before he disappears.

These would be people who would pay money to watch skilled players,
Who are prospective players and purchasers of cues, tables, balls, chalk, and patrons of pool halls,
Who have loyalties, opinions, and are creating their own encyclopedias of the games.

These are the sorts of people who would bring money into pool, instead of pool players passing money around amongst themselves.
All serious pool players should sneer at them; for they might change the status quo.

Better to be only a star in a pond than a superstar in a puddle. :D
