I met an older gentleman (he has a son almost my age and I'm 49), plays with an old plain maple Mali that he also breaks with. I played with him several times and wanted to get him something fun to play around with before he got too old to play much, from how his hands look with Arthritis it may not be much longer.

I found this thread https://forums.azbilliards.com/threads/is-my-mali-an-m-8-or-a-t-11.529776/ and that seemed like a perfect upgrade.

I already bought a break cue for him (it's arriving Monday and I'm having a White Diamond tip put on, I had him try my break cue and he likes it) and honestly I am not even sure if he would be interested at all in a nicer stick but he is a really pleasant guy and patiently racks for me when I beat him, which is 90% of the games LOL

I will put up $100 for the cue, if I can get 10 others to toss in a $20 I will drop some hints at him to see if he may be interested in something new to play with.
If you would like to contribute reply or send me a PM and once I find out if he would be OK to trying something else aside from his cue I'll get in touch. I'm most likely going to see him tonight.

A Player’s Sneaky Pete for right at $100 including shipping (exactly what $ you are willing to put up) looks really nice and will play as well or better than anything under $500, in my opinion.

Yes but since he was using a Mali and has been for years I just wanted to get him same cue brand just a different one. I don't want to just change his cue, just upscale it a bit.

Really the main thing I wanted was to get him a break cue, which is done, the Mali was just a spur of the moment thing since it came up just days after we started playing together.

You can get a real nice Schmelke and others for $300.

That is a good idea but my thinking was that the guy was using this Mali for a long time and I did not want to meet him and a week later go "so here is this other brand of cue you should use" LOL

Although once I chat with him for a bit to get a feel for his playing more he may be open to trying something else. It's hard to broach the topic though, maybe I'll ask "so what other brands of cues have you liked".

The Joss sneaky is also a contender for an "other" brand.

This looks nice

Thanks for anyone that offered to chip in, but after taking to him for a bit, no need for a gift, he has plenty of money to get whatever he wants, he offered $1,200 for one of the cues I had. And last night he showed me a new break cue he bought so I canceled the order on one I got him LOL

you would think a company as old as Schmelke would know how to spell Cocobolo.

Glad you didn't embarrass yourself any further. Next time a Go Fund Me for some guy no one knows and isn't in need?

Sorry bro, don't get it. I perform acts of kindness all the time but all by myself.

Embarrass? Did I miss something somewhere? I've had a bunch of people get together for helping out others on here, although it's been a while, collecting items for junior pool leagues and even money donations. 20 people tossing in a $10 or a $20 is much easier than one person covering it all, and 99% of the folks here won't be crying over not having another $10 for their scotch LOL

I too play with an elderly gentleman and if he needed a new stick I would help also. He has had serious medical issues over the last 10 years and it has ruined him financially, if he didn't still have his two Joss cues from before the medical issues I would definitely help him out with a new cue.

Good people need help sometimes, turns out your guy didn't but it's the thought that counts ;)

I'm not talking about helping people out. Do it all the time. I'm talking about being arrogant and assuming people need your help based on some savior complex. Books and covers don't ya know. The old guy could probably buy and sell you 3 times over, better off minding your own business and not dragging others into it blindly.

Not the point. Some people assume too much.

If you’re looking for perfection, you’re on the wrong planet.
”Hang” is a good guy....I pass on a lot of web charity things because of lack of trust...
...I offered to chip in on this one because of trust.

HA! Perfection, my favorite thing. So elusive.

Trust, that's my favorite concept. Work damned hard to not erode it. That's what assumptions based on fact-less beliefs do.

I just called it out because so many people these days want to be equity warriors and see injustice or charity where it doesn't need exist. People can be very insulted by that when they are seen as "unfortunate" in the eyes of arrogance however well intended.

Speaking of being arrogant and assuming LOL At most 2 times. And only after I spend my money buying things for those that don't need them. I think you took this waaayyy in the wrong direction.

I now have a break cue shaft from someone that I offered to bring to my friend who is a cuemaker to get fixed and put on a tip I have that they liked, is it OK with you if I do that or should I have him drive it there himself?
