Who was George Bettinato???

I happened upon an article from 1973 in the Los Angeles paper. It described Gene Nagy's outstanding performance in a straight pool tournament (a couple of 150's in a row). It went on to detail his expertise on the trumpet; and his subsequent decision to give it up in favor of pool. He credits a man named George Bettinato with teaching him the game; and getting him to that top level (running one and two hundreds in just a year and a half of play).

Who the heck was George Bettinato?????

I dont know but there are a zillion killers in NYC that no one ever heard of. Guys who might not even show up at a pool room for years at a time. Ill ask around.

Nostroke,
While your estimate of a "zillion" may be somewhat enthusiastic; DAMN there are a lot of good straight pool players in the Big Apple. This article makes it sound like this George Bettinato made a four hundred ball runner out of Gene in a year or two. Gene Nagy had Jeanette Lee running hundreds within a couple of years of picking up a cue.

My question is why the heck can't I run 50 (playing for 4 1/2 years now)??? It just isn't fair.

Howaboutnever above has 100's in every pool room in NY i think and no one knows him either.

I hate to say it but Willie may in fact be getting in some substantial runs, he just runs out of fingers and toes.

willie, I'm convinced when your around top flight 14.1 players on a daily basis, the game can be learned quickly. I learned from a very unorthodox 200+ ball runner which made me play a little differently. After years of playing that way I said to hell with it, and started over with a more old school approach to the game. I'm much happier with my game now running 50/60's weekly, but i'm not running 100's YET.

I know somewhere in a vault in NY there is a list of things to do and not do while running balls!:D Closest I have gotten yet is Jim Rempes tape on how to run 100 balls. I'm certain I am missing 2 or 3 key points to get me past the century mark more often. I'll get there by myself, it just might take longer.

Never-man,
The news article has it spelled Bettinato in a couple of places; but it would NOT be surprising if they fouled it up. However, Bettinato or Pettinato, I still haven't found anyone who knows of him - he must of been a dang good player. If he's still alive, I'd like to meet him.

Teaching them Pool is not that hard, but teaching them to 'think right' can take a lifetime .... lol
 
I figured I would bump this once a week for 4 weeks or so. We've got about 6,000 members, surely someone has heard of this guy. He must have been GOOD.
