Who "won" a split tournament?

I have gone undefeated to the finals 3 times in a local tournament. Each time the other 2-3 people have pushed to split so they can go early. I'm a sucker to peer pressure :o

Can I still say I "won" the tournaments because I was undefeated to the hotseat? Or do the splitters have to decide that? I know it does not mean crap as all got the same cash, but when you talk about who did what, saying I won 3 tournaments last month is a lot better than saying "I got to the finals but never played".

I've split too before but usually the person who is undefeated gets a little more, seems fair to me. I would say you won since you had zero losses.
I was usually the one who had to say I got to the finals but never played...LOL

I assume

it is a double elimination tournament. I never decide to split unless I lose the first set in the finals. Kind of dumb to decide to split when they have to beat you twice.

I have gone both ways, splitting after losing the first set, or going ahead and playing the finals all the way.

I usually don't split, (especially if I'm playing Koop in the finals:p:p), because I enjoy the competition. Usually the $$ doesn't mean too much to me, and I would rather play it out. I've never regretted not splitting, even after losing, if it was a huge difference between first and second $$, my tune might change(unless....see above;):p).

LOL...you don't split with me because you know you're a lock to take it down. :D

i never made it that far in a tournment:(

The trick is to find a place with crappy players ;)

Although I can't say that about where I play with honesty, I usually end up mid-pack. Need some luck with the short 2 and 3 game races.

I thought you were up North and Koop is down SE? If you are that close to each-other, you need to go visit Ayer on Tue or Sun and say Hi.

My son is going to be playing in the Jr. MA State Championship there this Sunday. To take the thread off topic :-)

Further off-topic, Rodney, Mike Webb gave you some good rep about a guy to see for cue stuff when I was there.

I'm 35 minutes from Ayer, and about 1.5 hrs from Koop, we meet up at the rack em up tour. The last tourny is Sunday, and I haven't decided If I'm gonna make it yet.

Playoffs for my weekly league start tomorrow, and I'd be surprised if we make it past 1, or 2 rounds, so I'll let you know when I can make it out on a Tuesday.

I definately can't stand in Mike's shoes, I'll have to thank him next time I talk to him.

If it works out, and you need something, let me know.

I've notice that splitting in double elimination is pretty common. I've say you won.

I've seen the guy in the hotseat go around asking everyone remaining on the loser side if they would split. After getting everyone to agree, he gets paid and leaves. Then the guys fighting it out for 4,3,2 agree to split 2nd and 3rd so its only 1 match to play determine 4th.

Edit.. I missed the "I've say you won." part. Doh!

I say there was NO Winner. Mostly because it takes skill and a lot of heart to be a winner. And nobody showed any heart in this
scenario.

ive only split a few times over the years. and of those times it was my opponent who initiated the idea of splitting. especially when its a handicapped tournament. if you place 1st your rating goes up a notch therefore making it harder to win. but each time i have split i can proudly say i did play the final match outside of the tournament with my opponent to decide who would have won 1st on paper, i did win each and every time :)

When no one plays the final match, there isn't a winner.
Only the two players that split the cash.

You have to decide what is important to you. Winning or the cash?

If your opponent wants to split, ask them if they want 2nd place money?
If they say no, then you continue to play.

If you want to leave early, split and don't concern yourself with who the tournament winner is, because it isn't you or the person you split the prize money with.

I like to ask the players that if they say they want to split, 'does that mean I get to keep the added $$$?" I get some strange looks.

I have split 1st and 2nd many times,,,from the one holding the chair and from challenger side.

Every time I have done it,,,it was down to the 1 game. Who ever wins this 1 game wins tournament.

Nobody can say "I took first place". But you can say you split 1st with someone! Keep the 2nd out of it,,,,,,,,,,,,,it sounds better!! Nothing wrong with it,,,cuz you do have the money!!!:D
