Who Would Like To See More Of Buddy Commentating?

OldHasBeen

I have really enjoyed the U.S. Open commentating that Buddy was involved in. I think he brings a lot of Color & knowledge to the games. He doesen't try to sound like William Buckley or use a vocabulary that is out of context with what he is trying to communicate. He is a pool player, talking to pool players, about POOL. There is quite a bit of dry time in all of the matches and Buddy seems to always come up with a great "color story" or keep us informed as to whats going on. "He is what he is - And thats what we like"!

I've heard him on an accu-stats tape and he did do a pretty good job. I think though he is best in the co-pilots seat rather than the pilots.

Cats, has a legit point about the Head Guy. An english, "language not cue ball", major is nice to do the intros and commercials But there isn't anyone who does color as well as Buddy. Hell, he is the most "Colorful" guy you can think of. Danny D. is good too but you can't find anyone that Buddy didn't beat, at one time or another, and has a hell of a story to go with it. Billy Incardona is ok but the times he was wrong, predicting what the shooter was going to do, is endless.

Yea, Buddy was and is great.

I'll vote for Buddy. I'd also like to put in a vote for Grady too. It's just great to hear these guys talk about their experiences.

Just like DCC, the announcers forget that they are still on a live mike. Billy and Jim got a little out there. At one point Jim, I guess that's his name, was giving Billy a hard time because he wasn't keeping his mike in front of him when he turned his head and Billy got a little miffed and said that he (the other guy) might have more polish but what the heck or something to that effect. Actually, it's kind of entertaining to hear them let the hair down and talk. Makes you feel like you're a little fly on the wall or something.

Good point, Rick. It's kinda like Howard Cosell and Dandy Don Merideth. They were a hoot. Damn, 1,000 posts. I aint got that much to say, lol.

Buddy Hall is da man!

I have some one pocket tapes from '94 where he and Grady and a few others did some commentating, and they were all exceptional, especially Buddy. He has wonderful pool knowledge, and talks about what the real fans want to hear. pool. plain and simple.

I enjoyed Buddy's commentating very much.
He is not the best voice wise or grammar wise, but
as I told someone that is not why I am watching pool.
I really enjoyed him much more than Mitch (on ESPN).
Buddy does a great job explaining the game and each
shot. I think that adds alot to it for the avid pool fan
and would help newcomers (especially on TV) to see
that pool is a game of skill, and alot of thinking. I believe
newcomers would have a better chance of respecting the
game/sport of pool.

Preacherman,

I don't mean to quarrel but Mitch is the pro and Buddy would be the color. I see nothing wrong with the two of them. I tend to think Mitch has more professionalism than that Jim guy on BCn. Actually, I think it would be great to have a threesome in the booth much like they used to have on Monday Night Football with Don Meredith, Howard Cossell and Frank Gifford. Mitch Lawrence could be the straight guy like Frank was and Buddy and Grady could go on and on about all the stories. Mitch would have to reel them in once in a while but that would probably be a hoot!

Yes, Mitch is a professional commentator, he just doesn't know the game that well. No comparison IMO to Buddy. Buddy knows the game. Nothing
against Mitch, but I would love to see Buddy explain shots, etc.

Preacherman,

I agree with you, but like most sports, there is one announcer that is a professional announcer per se and another announcer that might not be as good a speaker but knows the venue or sports topic better. This is why I think Buddy and Grady would be good but need to be paired up with a professional announcer so that the professional announcer can keep the flow of conversation entertaining to the viewers and on track.

I agree, OldHasBeen but if I put them in a trifecta, they would all break a leg at the quarter pole. Damn ponies hate me.

I watched an AccuStat one pocket match that had Grady, Buddy and I'm not positive of the third man, could have been Danny. D. One man I am sure of though was the surprise "color man" Cornbread Red. It was great, the downside is I can't remember who was playing in the match or who won.

That Reminds Me !

Buddy once called me while I was at the Burlington, Iowa tourney. He said I HAD to come to Detroit because of all the action going on and insisted I stay with him. He had a nice apartment all set up. I left & drove A.S.A.P.
The action was the best I have ever seen or will ever see. Without going into too much detail, I will tell you that one night/morning, I had -
A PIECE, OF A PIECE, OF A RAIL BET - MY END WAS $17K & change.
On the second day there, Buddy says we have to pick up "RED" at his house because his car was in the shop.
When we get there, RED is still getting dressed upstairs so we sit in the living room and wait. RED"S lovely wife turns on the TV and what do you think was playing - "THE HUSTLER".
I can still hear "RED'S" voice yelling down the stairs in a dialect & vernacular that only "RED" could muster.
"WHY, I WISH I HAD A NICKEL FOR EVERYTIME I BUSTED THAT FAT, NO GOOD, LOW DOWN, DIRTY ROTTEN, SCUM SUCK'EN ASS HOLE.
Now those were the NICE things he had to say about Fats.
When he came downstairs, we watched the whole second half of the movie and I swear - Red put on a stand-up comic routine that would put any Vegas Headliner to shame. I was laughing soo hard - I had to go to the bathroom to give my face mussels a rest. They were hurting from laughing.
FYI - I later heard Red say that it was a shame the general public (squares) thought Fatty couldn't really play. Red said he was one of the best - "In His Day" and maybe the best Hustler of One Pocket ever.
I can personally attest to that as my pool life started here in St. Louis when I took the wrong streetcar home from Christmas shopping and had to walk over 2 blocks to catch the right streetcar. I (14 yrs old) looks up and sees a sign saying "Billiards" on Sarah and Olive Blvds. I go upstairs and who do you think was playing on the back table for $500 One Pocket. Fatty & Long Beach. There must have been 50-60 people watching this one game. Now I had only played 1 or 2 games of pool before this but I knew I liked it. I was completly mesmerized by what I was seeing. I had all my Christmas packages with me and some of the older guys explained what was going on. This was before the movie (1960) but "NY Fats" was as spectacular, stunning, and successful as the movie portraid him.
Some old guy sold me a watch that only had the correct time twice a day for $6 & another old guy Hustled me out of my last $9 playing $1 - 8 Ball.
I LOVED IT! - ALL OF IT!
The dirty poolroom, the seedy characters, the sharpest desssed Fat Guy I've ever seen driving the longest white cady and YES, I even enjoyed "The Hustle" that was put on me.
I couldn't wait to get better at my neighborhood poolroom and go back for some more.
I did, & did, & did, & did !!!

Wow! Thanks for the stories Tom. It is a true pleasure to have another player of your caliber here among the others.

You should steam them and dip them in butter...
