Who's in the hot seat?

My information doesn't jibe with JAM's reports

Last I heard, it was "Biloxi Mike" Seeber alone on the winner's side. He sent Nick Varner to the loser's bracket. I believe Scott Frost has to play someone (Bustamante?) at 5PM. The winner will play Nick at 7, and the final will be at 9.

The 50 entrants had some heavy hitters, now mostly eliminated---
Gabe Owen
Tony Chohan
Ron Wiseman
Wade Crane
Shanno Daulton
Rob Saez
Teddy Garrahan
Tom Wirth
Dave Bollman
Grady Mathews
Larry Nevel
Jeremy Jones
A Filipino brigade: Bustamante, Parica, Kiamco, Sambajon
Efren and Alex are not here.

Wednesday belonged to Nick Varner. This is his first competition in quite a while, and he (along with the surprising Mike Seeber) were the only ones left in the winners side.

Then, on Wednesday night, Nick was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame. Steve Booth (of onepocket.org), the founder of the Hall, came down from New Hampshire. Grady was the host. There should be a lot of good pictures coming. Diane Hoppe arrived later and snapped a real gem with Nick in the arms of all of Fast Eddie's girls!

Earl is here for the 9-ball, which begins Thursday afternoon. Tony Watson and Sparky Ferrell also.

Norris Brady, a Carolina guy, played really well before losing a tight match to Bustamante, who seems to have taken a liking for one-pocket.

That's all I know. Hope none of it is wrong.

Weather in Goldsboro is simply beautiful. Not scorching like it sometimes gets at this time of the year.

Later,

Ed

I got mine via cell phone, Ed, from a morning straggler this a.m. It is GREAT to read a post from someone who is actually there to get the straight scoop!

FINALLY, some AzB-er's in the house! :D

AND I'm elated to read that Nick Varner is in this battle to the finish. What a great complement his One Pocket Hall of Fame induction.

I know you're going to have a blast there, and I'm sure looking forward to hearing some more updates! The sooner the better, I say. :)

Fighting his way back

Gabe Owen lost to Larry Nevel, but has since fought his way
through several matches on the 1 loss side including beating
Shannon Daulton and Jeremy Jones to be playing Scott Frost.

Gabe and Scott will be a very good match. The winner plays
Nick Varner for the winner of the loser's bracket.

I'm at the tournament, and the one pocket matches' times are scheduled for 5, 7, and 9 pm. I'll try to update everyone as I can (Internet is in the hotel room). I might even take pictures and post them if everyone's nice....

Nine ball matches are underway as well (started at 2pm). I play my first match at 6pm, and my little corner of the bottom half of the draw doesn't have anybody whose names I recognize, although there are plenty of well-known players here.

Good luck to you, Doom Cue, and I hope you play well. :)

Are the 1 hole races to 3 or 4?
And the 9 ball races to 7?

The one-pocket is a race to 3, at least that is the way they have been held the previous 2 years.

The finals in the one-pocket tournament, though, is an extended race to 5 in the double-elimination format.

I was thinkin about going ,But don't know how far is it from Augusta GA ,,

Gabe beat Frost 3-2 in a very well played match. Scott made a couple of mistakes, though, and Gabe was able to capitalize. Gabe is now playing newly inducted One Pocket Hall of Famer Nick Varner. Looks like all the matches are running according to Hoyle. I don't have a full list, but I know Bustie, Earl, and Santos all won their matches. Earl took a little while to get in gear, but once he did, he was out from everywhere. Assuming Tony Watson wins his first round match (and he will easily, he's playing a friend of mine who admittedly is only playing in this "for the experience"), he'll be playing Bustamante in the 2nd round. I think if Santos had been playing a better player, he might have had some problems - he missed quite a few shots. He still won 11-4, but hopefully he'll iron out the kinks and kick it up a notch. I like to watch him play, so I'd like to see him stick around for a while.

Oh yeah, and I won my first match 11-1, if anybody cares.

-djb <--- Yeah, I'll post the scores when I lose, too :D

As was said earlier, one pocket is race to 3, except for the finals, which is a race to 5. Nine ball is race to 11.

That's awesome! You didn't just win, you kicked ass! Congrats, and thanks for all the updates, they're much appreciated!

Gabe beat Varner 3-0 and is in the finals at 9pm EST tonight.

I updated the brackets, but am off to league and don't have time for a full story on the home page right now.

Whew! Thanks for that update Mike!!

OK, I obviously can't read a tournament chart. Tony played a Filipino kid and lost in the second round. He did not meet Bustamante. Bustie played a local named Steve Page and got all he wanted, winning 11-8.

There were no major upsets, although Robb Saez did knock Earl to the loser's side with a nice 11-9 takedown of the Pearl.

Tired. Might post some pics tomorrow.
