Why did Mike Roberts use two different zippers?

It's George Case Question - please help resolve...

Not sure if this has been noted before... but on my 2x4 It's George case there are two different zippers used. Why did Mike Roberts use two different zippers?

The bottom pouch is 20", and has a Scovill brand fastener. The upper 7" pouch uses an IDEAL brand fastener. The IDEAL fastener appears to be a bit more heavy duty. And the zipper is a larger gauge.

Maybe his logic was that the upper compartment would get more use, and is hence more deserving of a stout fastener. Anyone know for sure?

I am no expert by any means but the first thing that comes to mind after reading this is maybe one of the zippers were repaired at some point by someone other than It's George? Could be completely wrong, just a thought.

They are two different gauges and two different companies. All original.

I recall seeing this on other George cases as well...

My case is a new old stock gem - a closet queens for 20+ years!

Mine seems to have the same zipper on the top and bottom pockets. You can clearly see the latch in 1 picture and the bottom of the other pocket in 1 picture so you know I didn't take a picture of the same zipper :thumbup: This is one of the original It's George cases and not one of the Brunswick or later models.

Thanks for the post. Those look like Scovill fasteners. What are the pouch sizes on your George?

Has anyone else examined their case and seen anything similar/different?
 
I'm going to speculate that Mike Roberts probably had a good supply of the Scovil zippers still left over. Unless the zippers were wearing out prematurely, or people were complaining about them, he would probably waited until he used up his stock before ordering the other brand.

I considered this as well. George cases went into main stream production in the mid 90's. I imagine they had a lot of new old stock zippers on standby.

Has anyone else inspected their case for similarities in zipper differences?
