The losing team in the Super Bowl gets a ring, just a lower budgeted one that is less grand, while possibly equally huge or nearly so. Less diamonds and such, and they leave off the champion part, of course.
It is probably true none on the losing side wear that ring very much, but it is awarded by the NFL, and not for winning the conference, but for appearing in the Super Bowl. It's still a five-figure priced large blingy ring.
But I see your point. It isn't like pro football is much of a major sport, and it isn't like the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year or anything.

Why can't you Americans NOT understand that winning is not the sole purpose in life?
They were part of a very one-of-a-kind and grand event, they gave all they ever could - this is honoured and it really should. There are no real losers here, everybody is taking away a huge experience with him.

Because if we don't have that, the only way to compare ourselves with each other is penis size, and then these guys are going to feel really bad.
We have a winner! This is the correct answer. Nothing more to talk about. Very simple.
It's that 'everyone is a winner' mentality.
That's right. They compete all year to qualify for the most prestigious event in the sport. None of them are looking at it as a reward for losing. Something to show the grandkids someday.

I have given or thrown away every memento of an event I ever won, even first place awards. There are times now when I wish I had kept those mementos of times past. I suspect that the second place awards in the Mosconi Cup will mean a lot more twenty years or so from now than they do today. Every player on the team is a champion and second place is always first loser at best, a bitter pill to swallow when it happens even with a full field behind you.

The medal was for showing up, taking another beat down and being a good sport about it.
Yes! It's a nice momento that lets them remember that they played in a contest with only one other team,,,,,, and LOST! That's what that reminds them of!
Hope I never play you in a match. I have won and lost matches and tried to be gracious on both accounts. As a matter of fact I lost a match last night and I'm sure it won't be the last match I lose. Sounds like you whine when you lose a match.
