Why Do You Play Pool? As Much As You Do?

I was listening to the radio this morning and the host and co host were having a convesation as to whether or not golfers were addicted to the game or is it a passion, or do you just like to play, or is it something else?

One of the instances that came up were where one guy that the host knows and plays with went to the expense of putting together a golf bag identical to the one he plays with. One he leaves in the foyer of his home the other is at the club, ready for him at any moment ( he plays QUITE OFTEN ) the rub is the one at home rarely moves, but he plays everyday the wife is none the wiser.

Another is where another guy parks behind the kitchen rather than in the members lot, so that his wife won't know he's out playing if she comes to the club while he's there.

So I got to thinking about this, and I can honestly say that there are several reasons that I identified why I play this game.

1. The competition.
2. The comraderie of the friends on league.
3. But, perhaps the biggest reason of all for me is the persuit of the perfect game, for the moments that you achieve Dead Stroke, for the game or match where your not supposed to win because your the under dog, but on that day your doing all the bitting.

What are you guy's thought's & feeling.

I have grown quite comfortable with the knowledge that everything I do has something to do with women.
 
I grew up playing Pool. I have always loved it, cause at an early age I could destroy my older brother and sister. My Dad was a sales rep for Brunswick and my whole family were great Bowlers, but I sucked at the bowling, so my Dad taught me how to play Pool.:)

Your avatar, that isn't your sister on the pooltable, is it?
 
Because its fun and I enjoy it.
Its something that, no matter how long you play, or how good you are, there is always room for improvement, learn something new almost every time you play.

The fact that my wife enjoys it also is a BIG plus. She has improved so much in the past year that its to the point I cant let up on her like I used to.
Tuesdays we play League on separate teams, I love the rides home to hear how she should have beat so and so, or how she ran out on Mr. "A" player.
My kids love playing as well and we love "teaching" them. My youngest (will be 7 in a month), has one of the most perfect bridges I have seen! Better then a lot of adults, if only I could get her to play by the rules!:mad:
 
the pure enjoyment of hitting the cue ball into an object ball with a cue and potting it! lol

seems silly but that's the pure thing i crave and get the bulk of the enjoyment out of. plus the fact that you can always get better, and it's a great social game. and being good at it is impressive too!

so, pure satisfaction, and a huge drive to get better also.

I play for the competition. All my life I've played various games just to be competitive. I love to win and I love to be involved in closely contested matches of any nature. Last night's league was a perfect example. We ended up tied after 14 games and had a best 2 out of 3 playoff. It was tied after two with me being the final player. My opponent was one of those guys that wants to run out. I just wanted to play a good game. Most of the balls ended up in a huge cluster between the corner and the side pockets on the right side of the table. It took us several innings to pick them out and pocket them. I finally got my chance and made a three ball combo that I had been working on setting up for awhile, but pocketed two balls instead of just one and leaving the other hanging, so I had a near impossible bank shot on my last ball. I missed by a few inches. He had a tough cut and just caught the tit. The ball should have fallen, but due to loose cloth in the pocket mouth, it jarred and hung. I had an easy out from there. It was just so exciting to be in the final game, have it be a tough battle, and to win it. While there are not a lot of "great" players up here, there are a lot of really good players. I play as much as I do so that I can compete with them and have a chance at success.
My other main reason for playing is love of the game. For something that is basically a repetitive exercise, it is amazingly complex and manages to hold my attention for long periods of time. Plus it's not nearly as grueling mentally and physically as some of the other endeavors I have taken on in the past. I do find myself questioning why sometimes, but over all it is very fun and full of potential payback in friendships and excitement.
 
For 34 years

For the 1st 15 years, pool was for fun and fun only. Even if I was gambling.

For the past 19-20 yers it has been a means of earning money.
 
Making money from playing pool, that would be nice. Its a goal I hope to start soon, STILL waiting for my own table! Until then, practise when I can.
