Why do...

so many people say they don't play in leagues or handicap tournaments because it's only good if you play someone straight up, are the same people who will spend an hour haggling over whether they should get the 8 in a gambling match?

It's due to their preconceived notions as to what pool is all about, likely based on watching The Hustler and TCOM too many times.

Why do they call it a driveway when you park your car there?

I never ask for a spot, I like to see where I stand against certain players at any given time. Spotting screws that up.

It's a control issue.

Handicaps are created by a tournament director or by a computer system, and can be done either at the spur of the moment or over a long course of time. Handicaps can be skewed based on prejudgements, personal biases, jabber and whining by other players, length of time and consistency, or math calculations that attempt to quantify something personal that changes constantly. The player has very little if any immediate control over his own handicap.

Weight is determined by the two players, by themselves, that day, based on how they feel about themselves and each other, right then. Weight can be skewed by biases, pride, confidence, fear, desperation... but it is a decision made by both players right then and there. Weight can also be changed quickly, during the course of a night, with a little more bickering. Can't do that with a handicap.

That said, the only person I have ever known to use the "true to the game/ play straight up" argument also doesn't do any weight in gambling, either. This means he rarely gambles because he can pretty much only play people very close to his own speed.

You'd have to spot me the 5,6,7,8 blah blah, that's called major weight. :)

See? You just proved that you're "just another d$*%ed poolplayer" right there- one minute you say you don't take spots, you want to play straight up, and the very next breath you're demanding an arm and a leg.

Yup. "Just another d$*%ed poolplayer."

: )

LOL, I have never asked for spot and never will. But boy it's interesting to see you get riled up. :P
