if the radius is good
and the tip surface is good
why is mushrooming bad an the tip edge in need of burnishing??
the main problem i see is when sighting down the shaft that bulge gets in the way
so i trim and burnish
are there reasons for playa bility or other reasons to not let your tip mushroom
i realize its conventional wisdom to not let your tip mushroom so i assume there are good reasons

if a tip mushrooms it doesnt need burnishing, it needs trimming.

the reason mushrooming is bad is because the parts that are hanging over the ferrule will hit the cueball first (unless it's a center ball hit). Since it has no support behind it, it is more likely to flex/compress/bend which would give an unreliable hit as the cueball will slide off of it to a certain degree (or is it vice versa?). basically, you end up hitting the ball somewhere other than where you had planned and it could also cause miscues.

I have noticed quite some snooker player have tips with much mushrooming. Any thoughts or comments on that?

Hi,

Even if you trim and burnish a soft tip they will mushroom again because the hide compresses. When this happens you trim it and reburnish it. Eventually you will reach compression refusal and it will mushroom less and less on your way to that critical point. The problem with soft tips is that as they compress they are no longer soft tips.

When players ask me to put a soft tip on, I let them know these facts and I also explain to them to have a soft tip you must change it a lot or you will be constantly having a tip that is not consistent.

Conversely, if a player plays with a hard tip and he has it changed, there is hardly any change to his feel consistaency when he hits that first ball with the new tip.

bbb, IMHO... I think you have it about right with your original post. The main reason it is "bad" is the visual distraction. In other words it just looks like sh_t. But that's just my opinion. scdiveteam's comments are also right on! as far as the effects of compression on tips as well.

Every time my tip mushrooms I always end up craving some sauteed mushrooms in garlic and butter. Considering the size of my waistline, that is a bad thing.

Back when I was full swing RT Custom cues we heard a rumor that Efrin Reyes used Elk Masters, soaked in milk and pressed in a vise and they were changed everyday - Rumor mid to late 90's

We made some and found you could get more juice by doing this for about a day than found mushrooming and lack of soft. I guess if shooting pool was how you made your living and had multipile shafts it would not be a bother to have re tips every day.

I would say compressing the air out and lack of memory like a Polymer will cause the problem.

I know Efren used Elkmasters but didn't know he made them into Milk Duds? Another rumor I heard was that Efren would go around trying all kinds of house cues at pool halls, and pull off the Elkmaster tips on the ones he liked the hit of, saving them for his own use later :)

I think Corey Deuel is another Elkmaster fan too, least he said that's what he used in one of those 'whats in the case' videos on youtube.

It doesn't matter!! everyone will be using your Ultra Skins in a year or two anyway Tom! :)

Tom -- some good milk duds of today have no such problems, at least in my experience.

that helped me alot:(

Lol. Sorry my friend :)

IMHO the mushroom is mostly aesthetics, unless it is REALLY bad. I personally can't stand a mushroomed tip because it's all hanging out and sharks my aiming or something.

My advise would be to just keep it trimmed up and burnished and not worry about it. The Porper tip grazer is a handy little tool for doing this if you don't have a lathe. Just practice on a house cue or something until you get the hang of it, once you do get the feel it can trim a tip in a couple minutes, then burnish it out on a piece of leather and you're good to go!

Tom,

Did you ever see the video "What's in Efren's Cue Case". He plays with a cue made in Japan and only has one shaft. One thing I know for sure is there are not too many of us out there that would charge the Magician to change his tip.

I know he changes it a lot, I would not doubt it is every day!! He spins the cue ball on every shot with the EM and his shaft is right down there at about 11 mm. I would not recommend this to the average player. Efren is a pool genius and has thing going his own way for sure.
