Why is my table slow....

I recently had a Diamond Pro installed in my home. Among other issues I've experienced, it seems to play slow. Shoot, one of the short rails seems almost dead :( I talked to Brian and he explained that the balls skidding off the rails is normal for new cloth. I suppose that is prolly true. It still seems slower than what I'm used to even when a ball is not coming off the rail.

Any ideas?

Prolly not streched enough.

When your new cloth was installed - the cloth was prolly not streched enough.

I don not know what cloth you have but assuming it is 760 or 860, it should not be slow.

Things to check for;

1. Can you pick up the cloth easily from the middle of the table? If so cloth is not put on correctly

2. Is there high himidity in the room? This will slow it down

3. Hit the cue ball hard into each rail with low english and listen for the sound. It should be quiet. Any thumps means that the rails are loose.

New cloth will slide for a month or so. If you have a cloth that has a teflon coating the balls will continue to slide forever, not good.

Was it installed by Diamond? If it is too slow, the cloth might not be stretched tightly enough. They usually do an excellent job. The rails will take a long time to break in enough to bounce fast on a home table. Rails also need the cloth stretched evenly and tight enough and the rail bolts must be tight or you will hear a dull thud. Diamond rails are not as lively to me as a Gold Crown, but very consistent. I assume it's covered with Simonis 860 or something similar?

It's a great table. The ball return sucks but that's the only problem I've seen with them, except the balls bouncing out of the pockets on the drop pocket models. That cost me at least a thousand once and has happened to a lot of guys at tournaments.

Hey Pete, thanks for the prompt response. The Simonis cloth does not appear to have any slack whatsoever. You may be on to something with the rails, though. I've had the table for over a month and the balls still skid for a good six inches.

I tried what you suggested, hitting the cue ball firmly into the rail with low, and they definitely "thumped." Almost sounded like the ball was bouncing off the wood... I don't know, I payed the extra money to have the rails installed at the factory; maybe that was a mistake...

Could the skidding and the "thump" both be attributed to loose rails?

Thanks,
t

Yes the table was installed by one of their mechs with 860 Cloth. Seemed to be knowledgeable and experienced, but what do I know?? The rails were installed and covered at the factory and the cloth seems to very tight.

Your comment that Diamond rails (Artemis, I believe) aren't as lively as a Gold Crown might be salient point. I grew up on Gold Crowns and am quite used to the way they play.

How long do you thing it will take for my rails to break in? Since I'm married and working stiff, I don't get to use it as often as I would like; maybe 20 hours a week :(

I'm going to see if I can tighten up the rail bolts tighter than they are.

It's all relative. You might have gotten adjusted to playing on a table with hard, boingy rails, and fast worn out cloth. The german rubber will seem slow compared to that because they're not bouncy. The artemis cushions are consistent and once you break in the cloth, you will have much better speed control. English really takes, and the name of the game is smooth stroke control and using the spin off the rails to move the ball. I bet your bank shots are a lot different on this table too.

I think you'll get used to it and have a hard time on tables not set up as well as yours.

No skidding and thumping are two different things. The thumping should not occur on a Diamond. One of the most characteristic things about a Diamond (and there are many great qualities) is how solid the rails are. Either the rubber is not on correctly or the rails are not fastened down as they should be. I recommend calling Diamond directly, the last thing they would want is you to be unhappy.

The skidding occcurs with new cloth and treated cloth (I doubt your felt is treated if it is Simonis ). The skidding will go away over time.

Gold Crown IVs are too bouncy anyways... You can't even stroke the ball on those things.

Humidity especially if it's in the basement get a small dehumidifier for the room.

Pete, thanks for all the input! I've checked my rail bolts and all are tight. I think I'll just wait for the skidding to stop (must play more often !), and see what happens.

Note to others that are reading this thread. If you are getting the impression that Diamond does not make a quality table, forget about it. I have no regrets. The table is beautiful and well made. The issues we have been discussing concern the difference between perfection and a very good table.

Yes, it is called a "Diamond Table" due to it's unique shape. Maybe they haven't caught on in your area yet? I know alot of us are looking forward to the challenging 5-sided PentaPool table, due out next year...

Sounds Like a joke so I dont know which is true. Dont know why youd say its a diamond for someone who doesnt know about tables. I thought only brunswich makes tables, and that and maybe the ones ive seen at sears but those are like 200, not really woth it. Ive seen a pictures in ingland of much bigger tables, I think they use longer sticks I cant even think of reeaching across one of those ones. The game is more balls, all red ones and I saw a pink and black, I think for 3 players and the pink and black are like 2 more cueballs but are different colors so they dont get confused.

Where are you from, dude? That would be snooker. Diamond brand pool tables are rectangular, and may be the best made table around. Brunswick doesn't actually make any pool tables from what I understand, they contract that work out, but they still make great tables. Lots of other companies make nice tables.
