Why so many forfeits?

I was just cruising the brackets, checking things out, and I noticed that no fewer than 10 players forfeited their matches in the losers' bracket!! I know that Scott Frost got lost, but what happened to the rest? And it's absolutely NOT LIKE Dan Louie to forfeit!! Has there been some confusion with reading the boards or something? This is really odd. Does anyone know anything?

Howdy Ma`m,
I have been reading your posts with interest.your wrting skills (vocabulary, grammar, syntax and expression of thoughts in a coherent manner) are excellant and make me wonder who u are.your skills in English language are way above the skills of many pool players. Are u really a pool player?cheers

Thanks for the kind words!! Actually I did finish college (BA in English from Auburn University) many years ago, before I started playing professionally; but could you define "pool player"? LOL!! Seriously, many of the pro women have college degrees and many more have gone to college without earning a degree, unlike their male counterparts - who tend to gravitate towards playing pool 24/7 from about the age of 12. :D (My secret aspiration is to be the first professional pool player who is also a best-selling author!!)

I think the forfits are consistent with pool players lack of respect for the fans who pay to see them. Also the U. S. Open is very over rated in terms of its importance.

Thanks for your thoughts. So this is not uncommon, even at the U.S. Open? I'm still quite surprised....believe me, Dan Louie is a grinder, and he flew an awfully long way to be a no-show for his second match!!! I still think there was a scheduling problem or something. Maybe Don or somebody who's there could check it out? :)

I don't know how well her books sell, but WPBA player Shari Stauch may have already beaten you to the punch on that one.

Well, I was being rather facetious, but you are right that Shari has written a book or two. However, I would like to do something different and write fiction or screenplays, rather than pool instruction and the like (albeit undoubtedly with a pool theme!). :)

While you were busy getting your degree, you must have missed the fact that Buddy and Grady already beat you to the punch. ;)

I have been appalled at how little money there is in tournament pool. All my friends work at something beside playing professional pool. Some are highly ranked men and women and they all do something.

Here's something to get under your craw even moreso...Phil Mickelson just broke ties with Titleist Golf Co. in the last year of his contract because they wouldn't renegotiate the terms at $4 million per year. So, he just went out and got a NEW contract with Callaway golf to play their equipment for 5 years at a reported $10 million a year! How much do you think the winner of the Open is going to get to play a certain cue or to endorse a clothes line. What you'll still have is Predator (or some other co.) stating that they pay NO ONE to use or play their equipment. THAT IS DISGUSTING! Everybody wants to work on the cheap in this industry and pay nothing.

When was the last time anyone saw a commerical from Brunswick with one of their "player" representives in the commerical? How about amber bock beer advertising on the back of the current issue of pool and billard magazine and how many tournaments or tours have they sponsored-none! People keep comparing Golf to pool which is the same as comparing apples to oranges-stop it. Compare pool to bowling the two are more closely related. Does cuetec pay Strickland-yes they do either a salary or on a percentage of cue sales and he has played with them for about 14 years. None of the big manufactures will spend some dollars on a professional tour but they will contribute alittle money on big events like the us open, challenge of champions and soforth... Sorry, but this game or sport that some would call it is about "I" an "I" alone and will always be driven by the almighty dollar as is most everything else. Sorry I just am blowing off some steam. It is sad to see so many forfeits, I look forward to playing in the US Open next year and going to the one-loss side and having all my opponents forfeit me into the finals....

I stand to correct myself, I see amberbock beer is sponsoring the World expensive, oh er, sorry Summit of Pool in NY. 10 bucks a bottle!

Obviously, the biggest reason for this is that there's more money in golf, but I'd also note that golf enjoys a subtle but key advantage when it comes to the promotion of clubs through its pro tour.

On telelvised PGA golf, when a caddy hands a player a club, you see that player's golf bag, on which is the logo of his/her club sponsor. Hence, if a player contending in a golf tournament uses Titleist clubs, the play of that one pro might result in the Titleist logo appearing on the TV screen dozens of times in a single telecast. Many of the pros wear a cap with the name of their clubs sponsor, too. It all adds up to a lot of exposure for the sponsor. How much TV exposure does a cuemaker get for his product line if he sponsors a top player? I'd say very little. Equipment isn't recognizable to viewers and is nearly never mentioned during pool telecasts.

That's why only the very elite in cuesports get cue deals, and fairly modest ones at that.

Almost all of the forfeits were players that lost their first match or didn't show - you can't tell for the charts don't say.

At a Vegas Open I once saw a proud player play so bad that he realized that he wasn't in the league so he didn't show up for his next match - but Vegas is very distracting with other activities to partake in.

Were you going to the Hollywood, Florida WPBA?

I think you missed my later post about writing fiction or screenplays: although Buddy Hall's book might be considered fiction by some, I think it's nonfiction to Buddy and everyone else. :p And I don't think it was on the New York Times bestseller list either. LOL. I'm not familiar with Grady's book(s) but I expect they are nonfiction/instructional as well. Besides, I got my degree in 1988, WAY before either had published anything!!

Thanks, LAMas, you may be right about that.

Since I quit playing in 2000, I have to qualify to play WPBA events. I'm not there yet but there's a qualifier next weekend so with a little luck maybe I'll be in a WPBA tournament next year. I'm writing a column here on AZB if you're interested in hearing all about it!! LOL http://www.azbilliards.com/kerryimpson/kerry1.cfm

I have been asking around about Dan also with no results. I expected him at the Washington State 8-ball Championships at Shotzes but he wasn't there. If you hear anything let me know and I'll do the same.

Scott Frost did not get lost. he was up all night the night before and played until 10 am with pookie i believe. With scott being there at the open so many times i find it hard to say he got lost.....maybe in his money game....besides, does anybody know who ever won that match. i know it went on for 5 nights with breaks for sleep during the day..................................mike

From what I have heard, I think it was a draw. One of them had to leave town Monday.
