Why the paypal 3% charge?

Fair to me would the split of the % evenly to seller and buyer. In addition, paypal earns a load of money in conversions. According to xe.com, $1100 was arouns 830 euros and i paid aroun 870! So, i guess both sellers and buyers (if different currencies are involved) have issues with paypal.

It is hard to get the fees "built in" to the price of the cue when you cant even sell cues right now for their true worth.
Are we supposed to give the cues away AND pay fees and shipping on top of everything else?
No, you don't give anything away.
I'd like to respond to your question if you would share your opinion of
what exactly is "true worth" when it comes to a cue?
You may want to use the SW you've been trying to sell for a month as an example.

If you have patience, the way to go with paypal is an Echeck, the fee is only $5.00 flat rate and it doesn't matter the amount. I just received a paypal payment from Greece and they actually took 4%. The payment was $1100 and they took $44. THIS SUCKS!

Doug,
I was just going to tell this to Mully.. if you take a foreign payment then you get tagged for more. I will say that due to the economy and cues selling for much less people will ask for the 3%. In todays economy you can barely ask for more than legitimate value, because there is SO MUCH lumber available. So if you have a South West and you want to get 2100 for it, you want to list it at 2500 and haggle. The problem is in this economy that 2500 may make someone look elsewhere right away.

So asking for the cc fee or the paypal fee is not out of line if you are in the break even area for the cue. As favors for consigning customers, I forgo my 10% just to get cues sold for them, if I have to.

if you sell a cue or anything for around $100 is fine but a $1000 or $2000 cue costs $30 or $60, still if the deciding factor is the $30 or $60 then that is between the buyer and seller.
perfect point people gets good prices here in top complain for a freaking three %. there is always a cry baby . they dont think tha u have to pack drive ,make a line at the post office pay for shipping ,and in top of that they want u to pay three % isnt this great? :grin-square:  :D

As a buyer, I don't care whether or not someone asks for 3% or shipping or any other fees. I just look at the total cost and decide if I want to buy it for the total price. If someone asks $1050 including shipping and Paypal, and another person asks $990 + $30 shipping + $3% Paypal fee (total $1050) it's all the same decision to me.

As a seller I always eat the 3%.

Fair enough, but if you're a seller you're asking Paypal to take care of the transaction for you so why shouldn't you pay for their service? The fee really should be split evenly between the buyer and the seller........from Paypal that is. If they want to charge 3% then they should charge 1.5% to each side and leave it at that.

Again, I've got no problem with the seller asking for the 3%, I had just screwed up the math in my head, that's all. Someone mentioned there always being a crybaby. I'm hoping that wasn't pointed at me because it's undeserved.

mostly because it is the business (or the seller) that is utilizing the service to get the money. like with visa etc. all charges associated it go to the seller since the company is providing the cash transaction service to the seller so that he/she can get the money from the buyer. therefore, it's always charged to the seller.

but then again there are some who insist on paying with paypal which is fine, but be prepared to pay for the costs associated with it.
