Why would a 'junk' cue play better than an expensive one?

Because the squirt, taper, weight, and Balance combined were more suited to your game, stroke, and body.

And in what universe is a Predator cue "first class"?

Freddie <~~~ not my universe

Expensive or not, if I can make alot of long hard inside juice shots, I can play with it regardless of make and amount. There's a fine line between playability and owning a cue for look a vanity. Your average pool player have played there best pool with a shit cue and as life goes on and they get better, their suddenly on the search for a cue that looks fantastic but has the playability of the shit cue was years ago.
This might not resonate with everyone but it must with many.

True, often.

I don't think I will ever buy another 'fancy' cue.

painted points and dings

promised grandparents I would visit (retirement community).
While I was there , I used the clubhouse pool table.
Tried every warped cue they had , then I grab one that's 10" inches shorter than all the rest.
I'm pretty sure it was made of pine , looked like it was run over twice.
I Couldn't Miss.
Went back the next day , cue was gone , said goodbye , returned home.

I hate brass ferrules, chamfered butts, and ash wood....but I found a rack cue in a British
club that was all of these things...and played like my custom snooker cue....
...if it had've been dead straight, I would've bought it.

Sometimes you can find a cheap cue that plays well...but you have to get lucky...
..if you find a high-priced cue that doesn't play well, you got unlucky.
