Willie Mosconi SportsCentury

Sports Century is a great show, but there is a great bias in favor of athletes that played at least some of their careers since ESPN came into existence in 1979. Beyond that, not many from the era before color TV make it onto Sports Century. I'm sure this is due to the fact that far more footage of athletes performances is available for those years.

Actually, if a pool player were done, I think Greenleaf was, by far, the most celebrated of the twentieth century. Though as players Mosconi vs Greenleaf is too close to call, Greenleaf was a headliner and Willie was not.

SJM,

I would love to see a SportsCentury on Greenleaf, but I believe it would be easier for the non-player to recognize Mosconi, and therefore a more likely show.

Just my opinion though,

Jim

Let's see if we can get ESPN Classics to do a SportsCentury on Willie Mosconi. Here's the e-mail address:

They are showing The Hustler now maybe we can get some of the older matches or some player profiles. It only takes minute.

I doubt there is much in the way of films of Mosconi in his prime. Not even that many people left to interview. I found I believe it was a 16 mm film of an exhibition he did around 1945. It had a 150 point match and some trick shots and question and answers but the guy would not sell it. His father was an army photographer and filmed it at an army base. It runs about 2 hours. And was in perfect condition. I offered him a $1000.00 for it at the time and this was before the net. Today I think I would pay a lot more because I think through the net I could sell the heck out of it. I attempted to contact him about a year ago and could not find him. Maybe I'm a sucker but I planned to offer him $5000. for it possalility more. I don't know if another complete film like that even exists.
